[casual_games] Question of the (approximate) week

I'm inclined to think that the addressable market size for pay-to-play casual games will depend on the terms of payment:

* Pay-once play-for-life might become exceedingly smaller

* Micro-transactions based games could become nano-transactions based

* Portals such as could increasingly take on a pay-as-you-use model, like how OnLive has currently in place.

Then again, branding of the developer could play a major role in this matter. While indie/newbie developers might avoid the first option, it might still work for the old-timers.

I think there will always be a market for both paid games and free-to-play because I think they target different types of gamers. Some gamers know what they like or are dedicated to a particular game and will always be willing to pay for it. Other gamers aren't sure what they want and need to sample things first. Some gamers will play for free and never intend to pay. Robert

I definitely think so (and sure hope so!). While the whole free-to-play system is getting lots of love despite the ads and the pay-for-awesomeness on the sides for income, I do think that casual games will have a meaningful market. I do think that it will be even more download-driven than it is now, and that some creative marketing will go hand-in-hand with it, but I do think it'll still be there. I'm really hopeful that between apps and games that have the pay-for-awesomeness built in, in 5 years people will be even more used to putting their credit card info into a website and spending their money on downloadable games.

Wow, that's really tough to say. You would think that no, but the apple store ecosystem has worked well for 4 years now. It can last another 5.
