The answer to that question for anyone who wants to work in the games industry at any level is always "yes". You don't have to be capable of holding down a coding job, but understanding the basics is always good.

If nothing else, you'll be better able to understand what's going on around you and better able to communicate with your coworkers. It will help you argue with the coders when they tell you that the reason they can't make the change you want is because the dilithium crystals are acting up, or understand the reason why they're right.

Remember a while ago, in a discussion it was suggested that only in universities was there a distinction between artists and coders, and that was part of why the industry saw us as 5 years out of date. Well, it seems that the distinction is one that is not only in academia:
