This is just a reminder, today is the last day to get a 30% discount for
GDC. You need to do it before 11:59PM PST tonight on your pass.

I am really excited about the various session we are having at the summit,
here is what we have planned:

DAY 1
SESSION 1 Track A Outcomes of Successful Game Programs
Magy Seif El-Nasr
Takeaway: What defines a successful program and consequently a successful
game student? This session will analyze the outcomes of successful game
programs and how they achieve these outcomes

SESSION 1 Track B First Year Experiences
Brian Winn
Takeaway: Recent graduates will discuss what there transition from college
into gaming and first year of employment were like. Panel would consist of
approximately five recent graduates (about one year of full time
employment)

SESSION 2 Track A Faculty Submitted Course Critiques
Derric Clark
Takeaway: Developing courses is a daunting and difficult task. Based on
discipline, groups will display and critique their ideas and concepts for
game courses with the goal of an improved experience and outcome for the
student. This session may cross over to some individuals in the existing
game programs track.

SESSION 2 Track B Session: Cross Institution Projects
Stephen Jacobs
Takeaway: A frustration of many institutions is how to create a complete
game project in a program that does not address all of the elements of a
complete game work. Building relationships between game education
institutions would allow students to work with other institutions to fill
in the facets of a complete game they may not have access to. For example
institution one may provide some design and art based expertise and
institution two may provide programming expertise. Pairing these two groups
up on a single project boosts the overall work as well as the teamwork
aspects of game development.

SESSION 3 Track A Qualified Instructors and Accrediting Bodies
Toby Barnes Audience: Educators, Administrators
Takeaway: Finding qualified instructors is a challenge for all
institutions. How do you justify the credentials, when they may not be
typical academic credentialed individuals, of your game faculty to
administration and accrediting bodies?

SESSION 3 Track B The Internship
Jesse Schell
Takeaway: A candid discussion on game industry internships. Included in
this discussion are the philosophy, feasibility and execution of a game
industry internship emphasizing the benefits to both industry and academia.

DAY 2
SESSION 1 Track A Reaching out to Industry
Ann DeMarle
Takeaway: Industry/education relationships have always been difficult but
the growing trend is to bridge this gap and work together. This session
will concentrate on building a relationship with industry, a relationship
being defined as a mutually beneficial partnership. The goal here is to
present education as an asset to industry and not as a needy group looking
for help.

SESSION 1 Track B Industry Veterans as Educators
Brenda Braithwaite
Takeaway: A case study of current working industry vets and their
experience teaching in a game program on an adjunct or part time basis. The
goal of this session is to improve communication between these two
constituents and make academic institutions aware of the issues involved in
this endeavor.

SESSION 2 Track A/B Post Mortems of Student IGF Groups
Peter Raad, Tracy Fullerton
Takeaway: Short post mortems of the challenges of student projects who
entered and made the finals of the student IGF competition. This will allow
instructors to help design classes for and guide students to successful
completed works. programs track.

SESSION 3 Track A Gaming as a Course of Study
Jim Whitehead Audience: Educators, Administrators
Takeaway: A challenge of developing a game program is the legitimacy of
gaming as an academic field of study. There are those that may not see it
as an academic pursuit and this can hinder the creation and ability to
resource a game program. Being able to legitimize your program in the eyes
of decision makers will help to build and resource a program so that it has
the highest chance of being successful.

SESSION 3 Track B Case Blasts
Mary Flanagan Audience: Educators, Administrators
Takeaway: Case studies based on successful curricular endeavors. Examples
would be things like running a project class, engaging students, how to
develop course materials and activities, etcŠ

We have working lunch planned as well as a poster session. The summit is
scheduled for Monday & Tuesday February 18-19, 2008.

In addition we have secured discount hotel rooms through Personality Hotels.
They have extended the dates of offering the discount, please contact them

Sincerely,

Susan
