[game_edu] Brenda Braithwaite's game_edu rant at GDC

I think you underestimate the cognitive load - and the prerequisite
strengths - and the competitive pressure - of the core CS class. I took
them, as an undergraduate, in a cognitive science program from which I
graduated. I was lucky: I already had programming experience when I entered,
but I wasn't a CS student: I had a catholicity of interests - and a reading
load in philosophy and linguistics courses - that made me a poor competitor
to dedicated CS students.

The CS track was required for all cog sci students in my program, until the
program directors realized that many people who would have made fantastic
cognitive scientists were failing because they didn't have the discrete math
abilities at a level of fluency required to excel in CS, nor any viable path
to getting them. Programming is easy: children program. Some kind of
programming literacy should be part of the secondary school curriculum.
Optimization, data structures, compilers: those are hard. And they are used
to gate-keep the program, to weed out students who can't keep up.
Unfortunately, while many of the students weeded out might have made poor
computer scientists, they would have made absolutely brilliant cognitive
scientists - or game designers.

I understand that there is a bit of a turf-war under the surface here. Let's
stop that. Look at the most compelling games of the past decade, and ask
yourself: who designed them? What kind of backgrounds did they have? Also,
ask: who would have kept the worst design decisions in the past ten years
from happening? Who would have been able to see the rise of Facebook 5,6,7
years ago? Probably someone who spent more time studying social psychology
than algorithms.
