[game_edu] game_edu Digest, Vol 87, Issue 10

1. Having to shake the whole "those who can, do; those who can't, teach" reputation.
2. Teaching takes time away from those game projects you're working on.
3. Just like game devs have to deal with "oh, must be fun playing games all day" we have to deal with "must be great to have such a cushy high-paying job with such an easy schedule, what with only 10 hours of lecture per week and all"
4. You get to have your choice: (A) feel ethically guilty over sending these bright-eyed, hopeful, unsuspecting kids out into the sausage factory that is the game industry; or (B) actually tell the kids honestly what they're getting into, and see their dreams crushed before your very eyes by your very own actions.
5. The frustration of working in an interdisciplinary field at a school where every discipline is siloed.
6. No matter how great a teacher you are, no matter how much your students learn... the new kids next year are just as clueless, and you have to start all over again.
7. Most of the students that you inspired, groomed and helped to achieve the job of their dreams, forget about you five minutes after they leave campus.
8. You thought it was bad as a game dev with your friends and family not understanding what you do? Try a job where your boss and boss's boss don't understand what you do.
9. As crappy as the pay scale is in game development, it's even worse in teaching. And the barrier to entry is higher since you need that graduate degree that the game industry doesn't care about.

10. At least in game dev, you work with people who are generally passionate about what they do, and you're all working together as a team. With teaching, your students see you as an adversary and obstacle in the way of their goal, and their objective is to push past you while expending the minimum effort necessary.

Sure, these are generalizations (just as the "7 reasons" article doesn't apply to every person or every company), but hopefully that'll get you started :)

- Ian
