The Department of the Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites
applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position in virtual
environments, 3D animation, and new media art. We seek an artist whose
work demonstrates creative and critical engagement with new forms of
digital and virtual art in one or more of the following areas:
experimental digital games and artgames; software art, interactive and
computational media; interactive installation and physical computing;
immersive environments, virtual and augmented reality; internet art;
sound design & music for virtual environments, and 3D modeling and
animation.

The Department of the Arts has a 40-year history of innovation in
electronic arts, offering unique undergraduate degrees, a
nationally-ranked MFA degree, and a Ph.D. in Electronic Arts. The
successful candidate will support undergraduate and graduate curricula
in the visual arts, animation, games and simulation, and/or
computational media, and may also join the nationally-ranked Games and
Simulation Arts and Sciences program, a diverse interdisciplinary,
inter-departmental faculty dedicated to creative and meaningful games
and simulations of all kinds.

The successful candidate will also join an interdisciplinary research
initiative in Immersive Intelligent Learning Environments, designing and
building new forms of technologically-mediated learning combining games,
narrative, artificial intelligence, and immersive environments.

Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest

university’s Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts
Center (EMPAC) offers scholars and students opportunities for creative
interdisciplinary research in the arts, performance technologies,
science, and engineering.

The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree or foreign degree
equivalent. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of
research leading to external funding and peer-reviewed publications,
exhibitions, and/or screenings. Evidence of teaching effectiveness at
the college level is strongly desired. Screening of applications will
begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. To
ensure priority consideration, applications should be received by
December 1, 2012.
