AERA began in 1916 with the hope and determination that research can strengthen public education, society’s most democratic institution. To mark a century of existence, the 2016 Meeting will illuminate and enhance the role of education researchers as public scholars who contribute to public understanding, political debate, and professional practice in increasingly diverse democracies in the United States and around the globe.

The Applied Research in Immersive Environments for Learning Special Interest Group (ARIEL SIG), http://www.arielsig.net<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.arielsig.net&d=AwMFaQ&c=JL-fUnQvtjNLb7dA39cQUcqmjBVITE8MbOdX7Lx6ge8&r=axJiOhzaoOe97GizPjDGZA&m=t8WXfHxDG82noKL4f8QNKNnkctWpJzaMVLF5SMMTJy4&s=r0Mfa-n4Wujt7Ynrxs9mOovEHy4yX8tb8_JFq22Sk_o&e=>, invites you to submit proposals for presentation at the annual 2016 conference in Washington DC. The focus for ARIEL SIG this year will align with this year’s conference theme, “Public Scholarship to Educate Diverse Democracies,” and will be focused on the uncanny resemblance to the challenges faced by the educational community in 1916 - issues involving immigration, racial divides, income and wealth inequity, and global conflict. ARIEL SIG's stated goal is one of stewarding a robust community of educators, scholars, and practitioners dedicated toward research in and on immersive environments. Using a variety of research methods, we support a diverse approach to understanding the optimal use of digitally-enhanced immersive worlds and environments, such as (but not limited to), virtual reality, virtual worlds, augmented reality and immersive educational games. We are interested in developing a comprehensive research agenda intended to encompass the breadth and scope of learning potentialities, affordances, challenges, and shortcomings of immersive learning environments. Of particular interest are proposals that address the uses of virtual worlds, games, augmented/mixed reality, wearable technologies, the Internet of things, and other emerging immersive technologies in learning. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you next spring! ARVEL SIG Program Chair, AERA 2016 Annual Meeting Dennis Beck, University of Arkansas debeck at uark.edu<mailto:debeck at uark.edu>
