Virginia Tech’s Department of Computer Science is searching for multiple
tenured and tenure-track faculty members to join our vibrant,
collaborative, and rapidly growing department. We are especially
encouraging applicants with expertise in either game design/development
*or* human-computer interaction (HCI).

Gaming-focused applicants working in any technical area of digital game
design/development are also encouraged, and this position is one of several
gaming-related faculty searches happening this year as part of the new
Creative Technologies + Experiences strategic growth area.

HCI-focused applicants may complement our faculty’s existing strengths,
including virtual/augmented reality, visualization, social informatics,
tangible interfaces, digital libraries, and creativity support, or bring
new expertise in HCI.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in computer science or related field at the
time of appointment and a rank-appropriate record of scholarship and
collaboration in computing research, broadly defined. Successful
candidates should give evidence of sensitivity to issues of diversity in
the campus community and will be expected to teach graduate and
undergraduate courses, mentor graduate students, and develop a high quality
research program.

The department has 39 tenured and tenure-track faculty, over 700
undergraduate majors (17% women), 68 MS students, and 181 PhD students.
Departmental research expenditures last year were $14 million. Candidates
will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of productive research
groups within the department including computational biology and
bioinformatics, computational science, computer science education,
cybersecurity, data analytics and machine learning, human-computer
interaction, software engineering, and computer systems. Several research
centers led by CS faculty enable large multidisciplinary efforts, including
the Center for Human-Computer Interaction (www.hci.vt.edu), the Discovery
Analytics Center (dac.cs.vt.edu), stack at cs, the Synergistic Environments
for Experimental Computing Center (research.cs.vt.edu/seec), the
Biocomplexity Institute (www.bi.vt.edu), and the Institute for Creativity,
Arts, and Technology (icat.vt.edu). The department also plays a central
role in several university-wide research and teaching initiatives (
provost.vt.edu/destination-areas), leading to new investments in Data
Analytics and Decision Sciences, Integrated Security, Intelligent
Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities, and Creative Technologies
and Experiences. The department is in the College of Engineering, whose
undergraduate program ranks 15th and graduate program ranks 21st among U.S.
engineering schools (U.S. News & World Report, 2015).

These faculty positions are located at the main campus in Blacksburg, VA,
in a region that is consistently ranked among the country's best places to
live. The positions require occasional travel to professional meetings.
Virginia Tech is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and
strongly encourages applications from women and minorities. Selected
candidates must pass a criminal background check prior to employment.

Applications must be submitted online to jobs.vt.edu for posting
#TR0160116. Applicant screening will begin on November 20, 2016 and
continue until positions are filled. Inquiries should be directed to Dr.
Ali Butt, Search Committee Chair, butta at cs.vt.edu.
