Hi,

I’m a full professor of games and interactive media at Bond University, Australia. I’m currently working on a research project to examine the role of the creative exegesis in digital media post-graduate studies. A book publishing the research outcomes (see synopsis below) is under contract to be published in late 2017 by IGI-Global. If you are available I would like to have a discussion with you on the topic to help inform the content of the book. Your expertise and experience in this area would provide a valuable contribution. I am very interested in hearing from scholars with a wide range of domain knowledge in both art and programming.

If you are a current or previous postgraduate student who completed an exegesis as part of your studies I would also like to hear about the process from your perspective.

If you would be willing to participate please let me know by return email to pdebyl at bond.edu.au.

Regards,
Penny

Title: Creative Exegesis in Interactive Digital Media: Emerging Research and Opportunities.

Synopsis:

While it has been standard practice for decades that an exegetical component is included in creative writing and fine art higher degrees it is not clear how such research outputs translate to the newer and evolving area of the digital arts of interactive multimedia, computer games and software development. Historically, research in such domains has been restricted to using restricted research methods such as qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods and the descriptive and analytical approaches in computer sciences. Though as the lines are blurred between programming and art a discourse with researchers and educators must occur to evolve the creative exegesis approach to consider the practices of software development and visual, creative outputs.

This book will examine the main kinds of exegeses currently being submitted and discussed in the digital arts. It will include discussion on reflective/journal-based, 'theory' based, literary criticism, and historical or genre context as well as other contemporary approaches being employed internationally. The goal will be to evaluate their usefulness both for the student/creator and for the broader academic community. Through interviews with researcher-practitioners and academics in the field from a large variety of international institutions a framework for digital art research and evaluation thereof will be established.

The content will explore such questions as: does current undergraduate learning theory support the reflective or self-critical approach required for creative practice in the digital arts? Are current exegetical models employed for digital arts appropriate? Should the digital arts establish a unique critical discourse through the exegesis? What kinds of students are doing these exegeses and how does our understanding of their assumed knowledges impact on developing models for critical work? Does current exegetical practice contribute to a growing theory of the digital arts?
