We have used ethanol locks for short term prevention/treatment of line infections in 2 patients who had indwelling lines. It was well tolerated. The only concern was that the lines tend to clot if it is not changed out frequently. For double lumen lines we were alternating the use of each lumen so that the ethanol was changed out every other day.

Subject: [PAGID] Ethanol lock for CVL

Dear Colleagues,

I am caring for a 6y/o CGD patient with aspergillus pna/meningitis and am seeking input on preserving his central venous line.

He has not had a line infection. We are considering ethanol lock for line care. Our institution has used this approach on several patients and there are several ongoing clinical trials.

I am wondering if any of you have experience using this approach and if there have been any problems?

Thank you,

Chris
