Yes there was a battery model using 1 and 3 volt tubes. Zenith made a 
multiband unit (am, short-wave) with a lead acid battery to provide 12 volt B+ The 
battery was an Excide and was clear plastic with pith balls in each cell so you 
could see the charge level. !

There were also 4, 6, 7, 8 tube versions that added an RF amp, P-P output 
audio. The 4 tube had no IF amp, only good lfor local stations. .
