[SBE] going green

And....the other thing to keep in mind in my case, was the Tenants on my
tower. It is a coordination nightmare when I needed to do Strobe light
repairs typically every few weeks to rarely not longer than 2 months.
Trying to get 6 PD's to agree on when they can operate at reduced power
at reduced elevation with reduced gain, etc. etc. etc...
Also, I have a 1957 tower that has been put up twice and modified on
modifications...it needed painting anyway. Labor is same if grey or red
and white. All that being said I had a win-win combination. So I red
lit it. Best thing I ever did. I would still do it all over again.

I did just that. Over a ten year period, I calculated electrical usage,
the
cost of replacing the lamps yearly, and the cost of the bulbs. Then I
calculated the (12%) reduced electrical consumption, the cost of the new
fixtures and the labor cost of replacing those fixtures. I did that two
years ago and found that with the reduced costs of operating the lamping
system that the return on investment would occur in 6 years 2 months. I
would be glad to post the actual numbers. My trip to NAB last month,
however, created the need to recalculate my numbers as the cost of the
new
LED beacons has come down, and although public power in Eugene, Oregon
is
cheap, the rates have gone up.

What do you anticipate will be the savings over the life of the
fixtures, considering power, maintenance, etc...

Little over $2k. I had bought one of the originals and tried it on my
50kw ND tower . figgered if it worked there, I would be comfortable to
use it on all the others.

How about a real topic for this subject?

Going green is the buzz now. Frankly, I think it's somehting that we
should
have been doing all along because it's the right thing to do, not
because
it's fashionable and pleases the stockholders.

But now that more people are understanding the concern, what are your
stations and facilities doing on the technical side to promote being
green?
I'm not looking for the promotional efforts, I mean the real efforts.
Changing lighting? Replacing inefficient systems? Alternate energy
sources?
Tell us.
