[SBE] do a remote via phone line without the need for someone to run the board at the station.

In response to the query concerning doing remotes without a board op--Sine Systems used to have an inexpensive unit called the DAI-1 (for "dial-up interface" I think) that included a TDMF decoder and eight relays. I wired one up to our AudioVault system a number of years ago to do remotes and live news and ball games without anyone at the studios.

My configuration allowed you to call the station, enter a password, and monitor the on-air audio. Then you could go live and fire any of the AVSat decks from your your cell phone keypad.

Since the AVSat application was listening for different sets of closures from our satellite receivers, I had to build a play list and load it in a deck before leaving the station. That play list (think "control list") would have "RemoteControl=< >" commands to enable the DAI-1 closures and would also load decks with appropriate opens/closes, spots, and sounders depending on what teams were playing or for news/emergency events.

The system worked great but was never used. The talent/sports/news guys were very uncomfortable with no live body on the other end. I understand their feelings. They wanted to focus on what they were saying and not have to think about firing sound elements, etc. Bottom line--it didn't work. Don't leave out the people part of the equation. The technical solutions are redily available.
