[SBE] Fusible link -- when you really have nothing to work with!

A single strand of wire out of lamp-cord, about the thickness of a single human hair works as a fuse. Good up to about 1 amp with a 12 volt DC device.

Good call on the paper clip technology!

However !

My actual "used for many years" fusible link is solder.

It really works!

And, absent a meter or wanting to "strike" test a battery's state of charge, putting a length of  wire-solder (18 to 22 gauge or so) from one terminal to the other is a quick storage battery test if you don't have a tester.  Hint: don't hold the solder with your fingers!

And be sure to put a paper towel or similar protection between the loop of solder and the top of the battery.

Used this trick for years when I was a penniless teenager working on my '53 Studebaker and doing my ham radio thing.

Just don't inhale the fumes!!

OSHA does not approve of this "field technique!"

Come on guys! Next you will be telling people the proper uses of duct tape and chewing gum. Not to mention our favorite fusible link … the paperclip!!

As a rust remover,  Coke is best due to the high concentration of phosphoric acid.  It's what gives Coke and Pepsi such different flavors.  The phosphoric acid in Coke gives a flat acidity and suppresses the citrus flavor (Cola is Citrus, Vanilla and Cinnamon).  wbBill BarberC.E. Ever need a little glue for some small part, dial plates, and such that have no real stress but no glue on site?   Cola to the rescue. Actually any high fructose drink. Add a small drop of  Pepsi, RC or Coke and then hold the pieces together for a short while to squish the fluid around. The water evaporates leaving a sticky goo (The Pepsi Syndrome) and it has enough holding power to last for years or until you can get a real glue product from a local store. Diet brands do not work, only The Real Thing. Did it on a Key fob and its been fine for 5 years. :-)  Cola is also a nice rust remover, works in minutes. The high acid pH eats oxides for lunch.
