There are some days, I'm amazed this stuff works at all.  I estimate 6 compression/decompression steps in one of our national program services before the final television set decodes it for display (7 for content that we time delay)
 
Not including the original content to tape, who knows, probably one or two compressions there as well,  And then, we wonder why the lip synch was off.
