CLEVELAND -- Mary Haygood was in her kitchen watching "Family Feud" on WOIO Channel 19 when the digital television transition hit.

She wasn't surprised when static fuzz overtook her screen at the stroke of 10 a.m. Haygood, of Cleveland, knew analog television signals were being switched off on Friday in favor of a new, digital way of broadcasting television over the public airwaves.

So, she tried pushing the power button on a converter box that her grandson hooked up for her several months ago. She had never used it before because her analog channels came in just fine until then.

But turning the box on apparently wasn't enough. Haygood didn't know what she needed to do next to make the box work.

Local broadcasters said they have heard from dozens of people with similar problems.
