I believe Dennis C. Brown (d.c.brown at att.net) Sent: Tue 3/16/10 5:31 PM has proposed a good response to Barry's "What would you like the Society to do on your behalf?"

But;

I was in U.S.G. international broadcasting WAY before the present admin. and believe me radio's days were numbered when the Iraq war began. The reason - to provide funding for a war that was not funded by Congress. It was funded through emergency supplementals, not the regular budget. I watched mandatory funding cuts throughout all gov. levels (except DOD, CIA, and some others) to pay for this lie. The consequences - radio stations in Greece, Morocco, Delano, CA went dark. These stations operated 10-12 high-power transmitter, 250 kW to 500 kW and were staffed by 100+. The VOA stations in Thailand, Botswana, Sri Lanka, and the Mariana Islands are all worried they are next on the chopping block. The Broadcasting Board of Governor's believes content streaming is the best thing since sliced bread and morning sex and they were sold by the big money and big boys to manipulate for big toys. The USG want the cold hard facts to be persuaded. and not emotional pleas (back to the opening line).

Political partisanship aside, the problem(s) need solutions, not contentious invectives.

I don't know. The Obama admin. has made clear that they think radio is an antiquated medium. The admin. has been putting considerable effort into non-broadcast modes. Phone services are now required to have backup power and interconnect, which radio is not. I agree cell service is not reliable, and may never be, but the admin. is blind to reality.
