just a thought - it's not a bog standard AT keyboard is it ? - with the 
older 5 pin adapter ?

I should have a PS/2 to AT converter around somewhere, I will locate it 
and give it a try.

I mean these were as common as common things, so why re-invent the wheel 
when you wanted a keyboard to use.
