The Bosco Brothers

The Bosco Brothers
<http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/issue/postcard/12-11-24-The_Bosco_Brothers.jp
g>
The Bosco Brothers always seemed like such happy bandsmen, but peel away
their grinning veneer and you'd find that Benny, Buddy, and Binky deeply
resented Seabiscuit. The odd brother as he was known generally refused to
perform, claiming that his inherent "equine-imity" prevented him from being
able to sing, much less play or even hold an instrument. And yet he always
demanded a fourth of the proceeds. "After all, what are brothers for?" he'd
whinny. Benny, Buddy, and Binky were all for drumming Seabiscuit out of the
group, but Mother Bosco invariably intervened. "He's your brother!" she'd
argue - then add, "and I'm your dear ol' mum," as she reached for a fifth
fourth of the paycheck pie.

Idea Tree

Musicians all live in a greater community. It is important for living music
to connect with present day community.

As you may be aware, Composer's Voice
<http://www.voxnovus.com/composersvoice> is an organization that helps
composers by creating opportunities to have their music performed; in
conjunction with Jan Hus Church, Composer's Voice is also a series dedicated
to helping the homeless.

We have encouraged and accepted donations of food, clothing, and toiletries
for the Homeless Outreach & Advocacy Program (HOAP) at the Jan Hus Church
<http://www.janhus.org/> for all of our concerts in NYC.

We have found great support and have supported in return. Try to find
friends and allies that would love to collaborate with musicians and
artists. Become a part of a larger community and see how important your
music is to the people who surround you.

To Do or Not To Do

I have seen a lot of biographies in my time. There are many different styles
and aesthetics but there are some basics guidelines that work better than
others.

Probably the most important guideline for a bio is to use the third person
when writing it. In general people don't expect biographies to be written by
the composer and it almost always appears to be amateurish if it is in the
first person. If you must use the first person, it should be as if the
writer of the biography is quoting your own words.

If there is a second guideline which is just as important it is: know your
audience/reader. For the most part when I am working with biographies it is
because I am producing a show for an audience. Most people in an audience
want a way to identify the composer. A biography should give that to them.
Who, where, what, when, why, and how is the best way to start. Who is the
composer; where are they from; what do they do; when do they do it; why do
they do it; and how do they do it. Remember, a biography is not a resume; it
is also not a novel. Try to answer two or more of the questions briefly to
hook your reader/audience and let the program notes or the music tell more.
