On September 27, 2012, the Slippery Rock University Dance and Art
Departments, in association with the international arts association Vox
Novus, will present a new installment of 60x60 Dance: A 1-hour concert of 60
1-minute pieces of dance and video, set to award winning music. This is a
unique event because every minute there is a new piece. 60x60 Dance
represents a diverse cross-section of music, dance, and video with different
styles and aesthetics. Audience members are virtually guaranteed to love
some of the pieces, and dislike others. Regardless of whether they like or
dislike a work, in 60 seconds they will experience a new piece. The music
score for this concert will be The 60x60 (2011) Athena Mix, an hour of music
by women composers compiled from hundreds of 1-minute submissions.

60x60 Dance will take place on September 27 at 6 and 8 pm in The West Gym of
Slippery Rock University campus.

A one-hour performance made up of 60 pieces that are 60 seconds long!
Students and Faculty from the Dance and Art Departments contribute original
choreography and video set to 60 contemporary musical compositions by an all
female roster of artists.

A $2 donation is suggested at the door. Proceeds benefit the dance
scholarship fund.

60x60 Dance will be presented by Andrew Haspenpflug.

60x60 Dance concert offers rapid-fire excitement; it is fast-paced and
packed with meaning like a haiku poem. Dance majors and dance faculty
members will present 60 dances lasting 60 seconds each, with video and
musical accompaniment.

"60x60" is more than just a collection of short works played in succession,"
said Andy Haspenpflug, musician for SRU's dance department and show
director. "Each work is a different piece, but they are put together by
artists to create a macro composition for audiences to enjoy."

As students dance, videos will be projected on a screen, with techno-pop,
flamingo and avant-garde music complementing the moves.

"A timer will count down the whole thing," Hespenpflug said. "The point is
that it's rapid so if you don't like once piece, something new is coming
along. The goal is for each of the artists to make a statement in 60
seconds."
60x60 is designed to expose audiences to many different choreographers and
dancers with many different styles.

60x60 was conceived and developed by Vox Novus and its founder, Robert
Voisey, in 2003. The 60x60 2011 Athena mix was coordinated and put together
by Sabrina Pena Young. 60x60 has been presented in various venues around
the world, from classrooms to museums and art galleries.
Hespenpflug said, "the concert is a beneficial learning experience for
students because they must devise a 60-second routine, pick a costume and
work with other students in regards to a theme. The exercise is like playing
speed chess."
