REVIEW:
Composer's Voice
February 10, 2013:
Ola Brasil!

Preludio 21 <http://www.voxnovus.com/img/Preludio_21_logo.jpg>

Preludio 21 and Composer's Voice easily banished thoughts of snowy banks,
frigid winds, and a winter storm named after an animated fish. They
successfully conspired to warm up New York with a concert featuring
contemporary composers from Brazil. You may know this steamy, South American
country as the land of Samba, small swimsuits, and superstar futbol players,
but did you know it possesses a thriving cultural scene? Preludio 21 stands
at the forefront this rich artistry. Founded in 1998 by seven composers,
Preludio 21 operates as an influential contemporary music group in Brazil.
It's a treat to witness the passion and intrepid dedication these talented
composers bring to their craft.

The choice to use wind instruments-flute, clarinet, and bassoon-does much to
elicit the spirit of Brazil. The tone/color created by these instruments
evokes Brazil's varied and colorful topography, which encompasses scenic
beaches frequented by the glitterati and rain forests populated by rascally
monkeys and cheery toucans.

Maria Carolina Cavalcanti
<http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/img/13-03-02-Maria_Carolina_Cavalcanti.jpg>

Fifteen Minutes of Fame, showcasing the talents of flutist Maria Carolina
Cavalcanti, highlights the multi-faceted impressions Brazil imprints on
composers from around the world. David Drexler's Ecoando do Uirapuru,
features ambrosial rhythms that intimate the flair of bossa nova. Nocturne,
composed by Dominic Blake, alternates between major and minor keys, which
conjures up the image of two lovers embracing and recanting in the sultry
heat. David Rhoades crafts a compelling thesis of cultural potency in his
piece Shot. Frothing with vigor, Shot functions as a musical liqueur that
delights with its concentrated effervescence. Before Corcovado, fashioned by
Robert Voisey, avidly conveys feelings of anticipation experienced by pious
travelers willing to ascend great heights by way of rail, road, and foot to
pay their respects to the mammoth Christ the Redeemer statue. The closing
piece, Oliver Cameron's Macaco Atrevido-literally translated as cheeky
monkey-brings to mind an impish primate gamboling and amusing with antics;
it also demonstrate Cavalcanti's gifts for musical gymnastics.

Works by the six current members of Preludio 21 fill the balance of the
program. Two favorites that catch your ear are Hidden Cities, formed by
composer Caio Senna, and Sergio Roberto de Oliverira's Praca XV.

The duet of Kirsten Economy on flute and Elisabeth Romano on bassoon perform
Hidden Cities. The piece opens with an irresistible and hummable melody that
encapsulates a certain rhythmical pensiveness inherent in the daily routines
of a city. Although intertwined at the beginning, the flute and bassoon
eventually branch into their own musical journey peppered with snippets of
the original theme. Hidden Cities hints at the life that bubbles beneath the
busy, urban surface: Vendors hawk, friends bicker, couples amble hand in
hand, and parents affectionately squeeze their children as everyone pounds
the grid pavement in their pursuit of dreams, which can only come true in
the metropolis.

Bella Winds <http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/img/13-03-02-Bella_Winds.jpg>

Bella Winds-a thoughtful trio comprised of Kirsten Economy, Elisabeth
Romano, and clarinetist Rachel Grasso-closes the program with the spectral
Praca XV. Half a dozen or so prolonged, penetrating wails punctuated with
eerie silences open the piece before the first glimmers of an unearthly
melody appear. Praca XV then makes a hard left turn, becoming a dissonant
stew of rhythmical capers interspersed with forays recalling the initial
shrill squalls. It jars and jangles your nerves in the best way possible.

Composer's Voice
<http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/img/13-03-02-Group_Shot.jpg>

Works by accomplished composers Murray Gross, Aurelio Scotto, Robert
Reinhart, Brian Belet, Douglas DaSilva, Richard Pressley, Roger Blanc, Kezia
S. Yap, Erik Branch, and Vincent Euliana fulfill a pleasurable Fifteen
Minutes of Fame. Engaging compositions by Preludio 21 composers Marcos
Lucas, Alexandre Schubert, J. Orlando Alves, and NederNassaro also appear on
the program.

The Multi-ductor

The Multi-ductor
<http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/issue/postcard/13-03-02-Multiductor.jpg>

Concert audiences today are little impressed by conductors who merely wave
their batons at orchestras while providing the occasional showboating
gesticulation. Raised on entertainment that favors short attention spans,
these paying spectators demand instant gratification. That's why the
Dinklaker School of Accessory Conducting includes entertainment-oriented
courses in its curricula. Legerdemain, ballroom dance, calf roping, hand
shadows, ventriloquism, synchronized pie throwing - Dinklaker features them
all, and more. Here, Maestro Eugene Pringler multitasks his way through the
first movement of Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" by conducting,
juggling hats, and playing the viola line on a kazoo. He's about to turn
around and add the thrilling lion taming component to his performance. Alas,
he'll be just a split second too late.

CALL FOR WORKS

West Point
Woodwind Quintet

Deadline March 11, 2012

<http://www.voxnovus.com/member/pic/West_Point_Woodwind_Quintet.jpg>

Vox Novus is calling for five-minute pieces composed for West Point Woodwind
Quintet, to be performed at the May 11, 2013 Composer's Voice Presents

Park in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. The five-minute quintet pieces are to be
written specifically for this project, which will be performed by the West
Point Woodwind Quintet. All works must be five-minutes or less. The theme of
this call is the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Inspiration for the
pieces can be drawn from Civil War, art, literature, political commentary,
historical events, or anything else that can be associated with the Civil
War. We would like to encourage composers to be as creative as possible
while working within this framework. We are seeking original music and are
avoiding variations and arrangements on previously composed music. Please

Gettysburg. Pieces should be for: flute in C or alto flute; oboe or English

Call for Wind Band Scores

CALL FOR SCORES: newbandmusic.com

newbandmusic.com is a website devoted to cataloguing wind band music from
non-established composers; providing a well-organized resource for band
directors as an alternative to the traditional publishing companies.

About our site:
The typical publishing company does not function primarily to provide band
directors with high quality music, but rather to make a profit. For this
reason, band directors too often are flooded with low quality arrangements,
mass-produced pieces for young ensembles, and general mediocrity.

women's music. Recognized as a champion of women's music by institutions
such as Meet the Composer, the International Alliance for Women in Music,
and the Women's Education and Leadership Fund, the festival's goals include
informing audiences through performances of music that has been and still is
being written by women in an effort to broaden people's understanding of
