60x60 Dance Toronto
March 11, 2013

Take a quick 20 second look of 60x60 Dance in Toronto last Sunday thanks to
Marvan Kwan who posted this on Vimeo:
<http://vimeo.com/61586773> http://vimeo.com/61586773

60x60 Dance links 60 composition/ dance works by 60 different composer/
choreographer pairs, each 60 seconds long, and presents them continuously in
a one-hour performance.

In this one-of-a-kind performance, each minute of the hour features a new
composer and a new choreographer. The 60x60 Dance collaboration has been
performed in more than 7 different cities in 3 different countries,
featuring more than 500 choreographers and thousands of dancers. 60x60 Dance
Toronto 2013 features all Canadian composers of every genre (from classical
to spoken word and everything in between) and choreographers from every
imaginable movement discipline (including mime, aerial dance, breakdancing,
Kurdish Folk dancing, Flamenco, Ballet, circus, stiltwalking, modern dance,
tap, and many more) Directed by the award-winning Viv Moore, and including
pieces by Toronto glitterati such as the Kaejas, Malgorzata Nowacka, and
Dave Wilson, this mind-expanding mix of concentrated, haiku-like musical and
dance statements span the ridiculous and the sublime in one continuous hour
of pure inspiration.

CD Review
Alabama Places
Monroe Golden

innova Recordings <http://www.innova.mu/albums/monroe-golden/alabama-places>

Ellen Tweiten, piano;
Kurt Carpenter, microtonal keyboard

Microtonal compositions can have a bewildering effect on listeners steeped
in the ubiquitous equal temperment. While I don't possess enough facility
with this technique to understand all the ratios fluently, I have always
been impressed with Monroe Golden's ability to merge and juxtapose various
tuning systems.

Monroe Golden <http://www.voxnovus.com/composer/pic//Monroe_Golden.jpg>

Golden has an uncanny ability to make equal temperment seem instantly
"wrong" when put against his own homebrewed scales. Alabama Places, a
collection of a dozen of keyboard duets, pits the conventional piano against
a microtonal keyboard. Inspired by Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Golden
crafts twelve different 24-note scales for each work. In these pieces,
neither the piano nor the keyboard sound in or out of tune. Instead, Golden
merges his created system with legacy tuning to create more complex and
nuanced polyphony. Where the disc excels is in tracks such as "Iron Road"
and the five movements of "In Pell City" where the music contains a lot of
rhythmic and timbral space allowing each instrument to contribute to a
captivating chamber music/hyperinstrument texture. Golden changes the timbre
of the keyboard for each movement and tends to emphasize brighter and
piano-esque sounds over mellower bass and organ sounds. Overall the choices
and the variety of his synth are well managed and balanced. In some tracks,
the activity level becomes a bit too muddled to my ears and leaves me
feeling that the instruments were just nattering. When the keyboards are
allowed some space to breathe, Golden's strengths in balancing and
juxtaposing the instruments really shine. The CD contains a bonus track
accessible via computer of all five movements of "In Pell City" played
without pause and including Linda Frost speaking her poetry.

The Sunken Cathedral

The Sunken Cathedral
<http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/issue/postcard/13-03-16-Sunken_Cathedral.jpg>

Claude Debussy initially wanted his tenth piano prelude, La cathedrale
engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral), to be performed in a church at the bottom
of a lake or large pond. To prove that it could be done, Claude spent hours
practicing the piece underwater in a diving suit. Although he was able to
hit all of the right notes, the sheet music tended to drift away from him.
So he hired Mimi Dinklaker, a professional page-turner who owned a
Rouquayrol regulator, to ride herd on his music. But then he discovered his
piano was naturally buoyant; it wouldn't stay put underwater. And when he
lined the piano with cement blocks to keep it from floating to the surface,
it went sharply out of tune. "Estoy harto!" cried Debussy in Catalonian,
finally giving up on an in situ premiere. He did, however, pretend to play
it during the summer of 1912 when he was Sea World of Paris's Guest Artist.
