Enrico "Robinson" Caruso

 Enrico "Robinson" Caruso
<http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/issue/postcard/14-06-06-Caruso.jpg>

The great Italian tenor Enrico "Robinson" Caruso garnered many honors during
his illustrious career. He sang before thousands of adoring fans at all of
the major opera houses in Europe and the Americas. He also performed before
many heads of state. After hearing him sing "La donna e Exxon-mobile," a
visibly moved Prince Meptang of Vojvodina promptly renamed the village of
Petrovaradin "Enricoville." But Caruso was never happier than when he was
home on his ranch singing to his cattle. His three Holsteins, Bossie,
Flossie, and Bloodbath, were always especially attentive and appreciative.

May 18 Composer's Voice Review
By Jack Crager

 Jasmin Cowin <http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/img/14-06-06-Jasmin_Cowin.jpg>

Judging from the May 18 Composer's Voice concert at Jan Hus Church, the
future of new music is promising indeed. Curated by educator and harpist Dr.
Jasmin Bey Cowin, the show features brilliant young people who have
apparently been spending a lot more time on learning the art of song than,
say, getting into trouble. From virtuoso piano work to to one-man stylistic
mashups to intricate vocal ensembles, the performances radiate young talent
in all its glory.

First up presenting the Composer's Voice showpiece Fifteen Minutes of Fame,
is Japanese-born pianist Yumi Suehiro, whose amazing chops on the keys belie
her youth. She dives in with Fabian Beltran's "Prelude No. 3," a flurry of
descending figures and churning, complex rhythms that virtually shake the
hall; Manuel Torres Arias' "Nostalgia" offers a meditative but dynamic
landing strip; Burton Goldstein's "Three Strikes" breaks into a boisterous
to-and-fro between busy chords and relief; and Jones Margarucci's
"Interfering Resonances" takes its name from the delicate spider-like dance
of its interspersed notes. The moods continue to shift between the rhythmic
contemplation (at one point tapped directly onto the piano strings) of
Francisco Joe Andreo Gazquez's "Ronancia del trio" to the dancing bumble-bee
trills of Juan Maria Soare's "Breve toccata alls breve" to the roiling chord
tempest of Masatora Goya's "Study of Rhythm and Color for Piano: No. 1."
Suehiro's mastery of the piano's loud-soft dynamics, and her intense focus
on the material, have the audience in awe. By the time the set closes with
the suddenly triumphant ending of Zack Gulaboff Davis's "Scherzo," she has
earned a heartfelt standing ovation.

 Sam_Ross <http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/img/14-06-06-DRnB.jpg>

This could be a tough act to follow. The one-man dynamo DRnB steps into the
role with aplomb. Taking his stage moniker from the initials of his given
name (David Robert Brimat) and his love of rhythm & blues, the singer serves
up a self-penned suite called "Good to Go Girl." It starts with crooned
melodies over a recorded drumbeat and mix of harmony vocals, then shifts
into a shutter-speed rap with shades of techno rhythm, with DRnB working the
floor like a cross between Justin Timberlake and Usher; in a suave
maroon-and-black suit backed by an iPhone fed into a pair of high-voltage
speakers, he looks like a smooth street corner busker and sounds like a
one-man choir. In the cavernous space of the Jan Hus Church, the blend of
live vocals and recorded backings make for a bit of occasional murkiness,
but the performer's inspired singing and panache carry the piece to a
rousing end.

 Dobbs 16 <http://www.voxnovus.com/NM421/img/14-06-06-Dobbs_16.jpg>

The final set is by Dobbs 16, an a cappella choir from The Masters School in
Dobbs Ferry, NY - including well over 16 voices, but reflecting the group's
tradition of vocal talent from throughout the world. Directed by Gillian
Crane and dressed in black-and-white attire, the seasoned young touring
ensemble specializes in colorful vocal arrangements of modern tunes blending
pop, jazz and doo wop with polyglot rhythms. Each of the five pieces are
showcases for soloists: The Mike Posner number "Cooler than Me" gets rousing
lead vocals by Nick Flammia and Kadrea Dawkins; Dawkins also fronts the
Kimbra Johnson song "Settle Down" with rhythmic lead-vocal inflections
echoed by the chorus. In the Stevie Nicks hit "Landslide," lead singer
Hailey Parker starts softly and builds to soulful bursts on the high notes,
backed by spine-tingling harmonies from the group. In Christian Weimber's
rendition of the One Republic number "Good Life," R&B stylings seem to meet
the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. And in the finale, the Maroon Five dance-fest
"Moves Like Jagger" features Rory Maglich and Emma Rubinson leading the
singers in a blend of studied cool and bursts of passion.

With its stylistic variety and youthful energy, this is a day in which
educators, young enthusiasts, up-and-coming stars, and outright prodigies
share the stage and point the way to the music of tomorrow.

Composer's Voice presents: 6th Annual Guitar Concert

Sunday, June 8th, 2014 at 1:00 PM

The Composer's Voice Concert Series is a collaboration between Vox Novus and
Jan Hus Church. Performances are short chamber concerts held at Jan Hus
Church and are an opportunity for contemporary composers to express their
aesthetic and personal voice. The June 8th afternoon performance is the 6th
Annual Guitar Concert for the series and will feature the work of a wide
variety of composers and performers from across the world.

"it's on the edge of what's happening" -Brant Lyon, Great Weather for Media

This concert will be guest curated by Cristian Amigo and will feature both
pre-composed and improvised works for guitar. Amigo is an American composer,
guitarist, producer, and educator who explores connections between art music
and American popular and roots musics. He writes avant-music for chamber
ensembles, orchestra, opera, theater, and film and composes and performs in
various roots and experimental music groups. Amigo is currently
composer-in-residence at INTAR Theater in New York City and has received
awards and fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation,
the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and
Meet the Composer.

Founded in 2001 by Robert Voisey, the Composer's Voice Concert Series has
had more than 100 concerts in New York City. Works are chosen from a wide
range of contemporary composers and performed by dedicated musicians devoted
to new music. The series has presented the works of hundreds of living
composers from around the world. Concerts are held two times a month in the
afternoon on the second and last Sundays of most months. The performances
are recorded and archived to further promote the new music, performers, and
composers. Audio, video, scores, and programs can be found on the Composer's
Voice website. www.ComposersVoice.com

Listed as "One of the premier showcases for promising composers" by Time Out
New York, this performance includes works from a unique set of composers and
improvisors performed by leading NYC guitarists: Cristian Amigo, Laura
Kaminsky, Charlie Rauh, Bern Nix, Elliot Sharp, and Nathaly Joanne Corales,
which reflect the curator's aesthetic and experiences.

These composers and performers have been heard around the world in the
United States, Europe, Canada, Latin America, Africa; in venues including:
Merkin Concert Hall, Miller Theater, Tenri Cultural Center, Weill Recital
Hall, Symphony Space, the Kitchen, Alice Tully Hall Lincoln Center, the
Chocolate Factory, the Frist Art Museum, Wigmore Hall, King's Place,
Fundacion Juan March, and Glinka Hall. They have worked with such artists as
Ornette Coleman, Mark Ribot, Wadada Leo Smith, Eve Beglarian, Ingrid
Laubrock, Jack DeJohnette, Ensemble Modern, Kronos Quartet, JACK Quartet,
and the Orchestra of St. Luke's. They are champions of contemporary music
and are frequent Composer's Voice concerts often.
