Expectations among classical music aficionados were high when Maestro Dingo
Dinklaker's downbeat began Act 1 of Gustav Mahler's previously unknown
opera, Die Pummelig Taxi-Tanzer, or "The Pudgy Taxi Dancer." Like many of
W.R. Wagner's operas, Taxi-Tanzer employed leitmotifs that related to
specific characters: the taxi dancer leitmotif was played on a gro?e
Basstrommel, or big bass drum, an instrument invented expressly for the
opera. Unfortunately, the first time the drum was struck, its shock wave
contributed to an architectural anomaly in the front eight rows of the
balcony, whose occupants abruptly found themselves in the laps of the
audience members beneath them. But it wasn't until the next measure, when
the drum was struck for the second time - fortissimo! - that chaos on the
order of the Tunguska event of June 30, 1908, transpired. Consequently,
Maestro Dinklaker never did get to Act 2.

60x60 Dance Louisiana Mix 
April 10, 2015 
Friday at 8:00pm 

Vox Novus and Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Dance
Department are delighted to collaborate on a special edition of 60x60
focused on Louisiana. Curator Lisa Benner selected 60 compositions to be
played continuously in a one-hour live dance concert featuring original
choreography by Audra Allen, J Lillian Gray and LSMSA dance composition
students. Performances are Friday, April 10th at 7pm, Saturday April 11th at
4pm and 7pm. Minimum suggested donation: $7. Because of the structure of the
concert, there will be no late seating and no intermission. 

60x60 is a one-hour-long show made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded pieces of
music by 60 different composers. Each piece a minute in length or shorter.
60x60 has been presented in many performance formats including TV shows,
radio shows, multimedia and multidisciplinary events, as well as published
several albums of works. Since 2003, 60x60 has received thousands of
submissions from over 30 countries. Highlighting the work of a great many
artists and composers, 60x60 testifies to the vibrancy of contemporary
composition by presenting a diverse array of styles, aesthetics, and
techniques being used today. 

Established by the Louisiana state legislature in 1982, Louisiana School for
Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) belongs to an expanding group of
state-supported, residential high schools founded to serve the academic,
artistic, and creative needs of many of the state's best students.

J Lillian Gray: MFA Dance, Lighting Design and Film 2005 OSU. BGS 1999 SELU.
Agame Yoga 300hr 2012; 200hrRYT at The Yoga School of Covington 2015. She
joined IATSE Local 12 in 2006 as the Technical Director of The Capitol
Theatre in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Former Lighting Technician for LSU
Student Union Theatre, Mz. Gray returned to Natchitoches in 2012 as an
adjunct professor at NSU and Facility Manager of LSMSA, where she is also an
alum. Mz. Gray has enjoyed re-discovering choreography through her
professional relationship with Audra Allen, Dance Faculty at LSMSA. She
especially enjoys lighting design for post-modern dance, recycling, textile
arts, cooking and watching sunsets

Audra Allen

Audra Allen, Director of Dance at the Louisiana School for Math, Science and
the Arts and Adjunct Professor at Northwestern State University, both in
Natchitoches, LA, graduated with her Masters of Fine Arts degree and
completed the College Teaching Certificate from the University of Arizona.
She received her BA in Music Theatre; Concentration in Dance from Colorado
Mesa University. Audra was Co-Artistic Director of the non-profit company
Dance for a Cause and on Faculty with Ballet Rincon Dance Academy in Tucson,
AZ before coming to LSMSA. Audra has been dancing for 25 years and teaching
for over 15 years in ballet, modern, jazz and supplementing with music
theatre, hip hop, tap, African and flamenco to name a few. Her eclectic
style in training and performance carries over to her choreography in all

Lisa Benner

Lisa Benner has performed both as soloist and member with many professional
choirs, including the LSU Opera, the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus, the Green
Bay Chamber Choir, and Red River Choral. She has directed church choirs,
mixed choirs, and women's choirs in Wisconsin and Louisiana, and was
assistant choir director for the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus.

Vox Novus is pleased to announce the selections for Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame
with Mirel Iancovici 

Vox Novus is called for one-minute pieces composed for solo cello with a
theme of silence but not soundlessness. 

Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: A Minute of Silence (but not soundlessness), Mirel
Iancovici: solo cello to be premiered August 2015 at the International Cello
Festival Zutphen, the Netherlands. 

A Minute of Silence (but not soundlessness):

I invited composers to explore the space in-between; that is when the
movement stops and we take a break like a fermata or cadenza or just rest. 

I wanted composers to feel challenged by this and create such musical jewels
that I could put together in a performing "necklace'' of works. 

To be more specific: 

Let's submerge in our thoughts
Let's empty our mind
Let's open our heart in a meditation upon infinity.

Take as an example: the enigmatic Sarabande from Bach's 5th cello solo suite
with her virtual complexity and yet so simple! I believe the Sarabande is a
she with her beautifully shaped melodic contour like the body of a beautiful
woman. Even the most orthodox' defenders, which I am not, of the authentic
way of performing baroque music wouldn't dare to add ornaments, embellish it
by seconda volta repeat. 
Is Paul Celan, the great German language poet, referring to this when he
concludes his poem Cello-Einsatz?

Mirel Iancovici 

Mirel Iancovici, cellist, teacher, composer, arranger and conductor, was
born in Romania. After studying under Serafim Antropov in Bucharest
Conservatory and completing with Radu Aldulescu and Paul Tortelier, he won
many important international competitions such as: "Gaspar Cassado"
Florence, Italy - the First Prize and several special prizes; "Imperial
Tobacco Cello Competition" Bristol, U.K. - the First Prize and Gold Medal;
"Pablo Casals Centenary" Barcelona, Spain - the First Prize. Since then his
concert and recital schedule has commanded extensive travel throughout
Europe, the United States and Far East as well Radio/TV recordings and
records for Electrecord, Attacca, Albany etc. From 1997 he is the artistic
director of 'Schubert & Co.'' Chamber Music Concert Series in Maastricht
(Netherlands) and the founder and leader of I Multicelli. 

He has performed in Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Lincoln Center
New York, Philharmonie Berlin, Palau de la Musica Barcelona, Kennedy Center
Washington, Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, in Festivals such as "Y.
Menuhin Festival" Gstaad, "Upper Galilee Chamber Music Days" Israel, "G.
Enescu Festival" Bucharest, Kuhmo (Finland) etc. collaborating with such
distinguished artists as such as Claudio Abbado, Philippe Entremont, Herman
Krebbers, Silvia Marcovici, Raphael Oleg, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yoav
Talmi, Paul Tortelier, Han de Vries, Gerard Wyss. 

As a passionate advocate and promoter of contemporary music Mirel Iancovici
has created many compositions written and dedicated to him by distinguished
composers from all of the world. 

Mirel Iancovici, a much saught-after teacher and educator, is currently
Professor of Violoncello at the Maastricht and Fontys Conservatory (Holland)
and has given master classes in France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Holland,
Poland, Romania, USA and South Korea.
