Craig Hultgren will be performing both acoustic and electroacoustic works.
He will be joined for duos by Stonehill College composer James Bohn in
Bohn’s Chamone for cello, toy piano and sound file and by Boston cellist
Kevin Crudder. The program also includes Pinhoti for cello and sound file by
Alabama composer Monroe Golden, Liquid Fire for cello and video by Rusty
Banks, Carried Interest for cello and speaking cellist by Douglas Ovens, I
understand you perfectly
for cello and sound file by New York composer
Melissa Grey, and Harmonic Explorations by the director of the Composer’s
Voice Series in New York Robert Voisey.

Hultgren recently performed at Carnegie Hall for Dorothy Hindman's
Retrospective, "played with impressive poise and sensitivity by cellist
Craig Hultgren, ... using bystander video from Gray’s arrest for both spoken
words and pitch sources. Rough Ride is more abstract and more powerful, the
cello line shining and abrading, like fiberglass threads, the fragmented
text outlining a sense of tragedy."

For several decades, cellist Craig Hultgren has been a fixture on the scenes
for new music, the newly creative arts, and the avant-garde. Hultgren
recently left Birmingham, Alabama after more than 30 years as a member of
the Alabama Symphony and now resides outside of Decorah, Iowa as the
farmer-cellist. A recipient of two Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State
Council on the Arts, he was a member for many years of Thámyris, a
contemporary chamber music ensemble in Atlanta. He is a founding member of
Luna Nova, a new music ensemble with a large repertoire of performances
available as podcast downloads on iTunes. Craig has performed on Composer's
Voice, Circuit Bridges, 60x60, and Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame. Hultgren is
featured in three solo CD recordings including The Electro-Acoustic Cello
Book on Living Artist Recordings. For ten years, he produced the Hultgren
Solo Cello Works Biennial, an international competition that highlighted the
best new compositions for the instrument. Last year, he was the featured
performer for the Electronic Music Midwest Festival held at Lewis University
outside of Chicago.
