The Argus Quartet’s “vivacious foursome” (The New Yorker) is committed
to bringing thoughtful and personal programs to both seasoned listeners
and audiences new to classical music. The Quartet enjoys projects that
celebrate collaboration, community, and risk-taking in venues of all
shapes and sizes.
Praised for playing with “supreme melodic control and total authority”
and “decided dramatic impact” (Calgary Herald), Argus has quickly
emerged as one of today’s most dynamic and versatile ensembles. Formed
in Los Angeles in 2013, the Quartet has performed in some of the
country’s most prestigious venues and festivals, including Lincoln
Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Chamber Music Society of Detroit, the Ravinia
Festival, the Albany Symphony’s American Music Festival, and Music
Academy of the West. In 2017, Argus won First Prize at both the M-Prize
Chamber Arts Competition and the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh
Competition.
Washington DC based composer/educator Noam Faingold's music has been
described as "...lyrical...", "...exhilarating...", and "...a
tour-de-force of Jazz melded with Classical..." by The New York Times,
The BBC, and Downbeat Magazine, among others.
Faingold is passionate about composing for traditional and cross-genre
projects. Highlights include works for NY Philharmonic oboist Rob Botti,
cellist Inbal Segev, and the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra and 20th
century poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko's family (an elegy in the poet's memory
on Navona Records).
Matthew Hetz, a Los Angeles native, began piano lessons at age 16 whose
primary teachers were Marlene Kendall and Howard Weisel, both students
of Jakob Gimpel. He began playing the violin at age 23-he is primarily
self-taught. Hetz studied composition with Marshall Bialovsky at Cal
State Dominguez Hills, from which he graduated Cum Laude.
Hetz is an instructor at Emeritus/Santa Monica College. He is past
president/executive director of the Culver City Symphony
Orchestra/Marina del Rey Symphony, and also plays in the orchestra. He
is an environmental and mass transit advocate.
Heather Niemi Savage is a Rhode Island-based composer and her works have
been performed nationwide. Heather's work has been featured on the radio
programs, "Music of Our Mothers and "Classical Discoveries." Her piece,
Daughter of the Stars, placed second in the 2020 American Prize
composition competition (pops/light-music division) and was released on
Ablaze Records' Orchestral Masters Volume 7.
Dustin Schulze is a Texas born composer. He has been featured as an
"Editors Choice" by the JW Pepper Music Publishing Company. Dustin's new
release for concert band, Shades of Glass, was a finalist for the 2020
American Prize in composition.
Contemporary Quartets and Composer’s Voice are Vox Novus projects,
bringing new music to audiences everywhere.
