Hi Alex,

Thanks for the comments. You ask what should academia do about the problem.
That's an awful big question, with multiple solutions, but one of the basic
solutions is for academia to actually say there is a problem.

One of the first thoughts that came to mind was I wouldn't isolate academia
more from industry by setting up separate academic awards. I'd be trying
to integrate such awards with the industry.

But more, I think academia needs to acknowledge it's weakness in the field,
and take aggressive steps to mitigate the problem. For example, perhaps
put basic qualifications for teaching in the field like having actually been
published. Academia should also be aggressively going to where the
knowledge and experience is and aggressively raiding industry. If game
expert don't have the skills in teaching or research, then perhaps academia
needs to be providing special programs to effectively facilitate those
skills.

Building lines of communication is important as well. Some schools do this
aggressively, but my impression is that these schools are in the minority.

Finally, I would be looking to schools with successful programs. What are
they doing right?

Cheers,

Mark
