[game_edu] Doctorate in Game Design / Development

Also, the MFA does not necessarily need to be in game design to get a job teaching game design. However I would expect real world experience in lieu of that, if I were hiring.

One other point: some institutions require a PhD and will not accept an MFA as an equivalent when hiring. Another IU campus just announced a tenure-track job opening that stressed both research and production as requirements and stressed that candidates must have a PhD. Finding PhDs in games with decent production experience is not an easy task.

Steve,
I don't think we have put anything on the website as of yet for the
new membership program. I would suggest that you contact Joda Sapp - jsapp at TALLEY.com
and tell him you want info on the institutional partner memberships.
I copied him on this email so you or anyone who has questions about
the institutional partner program can contact him directly. You can
also ask him about the GDC discount. I am not sure why that has not
been updated on the web, but the $75 off is really nice.

BTW, We are going to have a really great Education Summit this year, I
will announce details soon, the theme is on collaboration. Our
keynotes will be Kelle Santiago from thatvideogamecompany makers of
Flower and Flow on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, Jeremah Slaczka & Marius
Falhbusch from 5th Cell makers of Scribblenauts will headline. GDC
this year will have the summits on Tuesday/Wednesday and the
conference will go through Saturday. GDC is March 9-13, 2010.

I have set aside a block of rooms at $109+tax

Greetings,

Is anyone aware or familiar with any such degree offering? Especially one that is offered almost exclusively online or can be taken remotely? Or perhaps there are institutions that offer the flexibility for the student to "create" the degree? If not specifically game design and/or development, then perhaps something related to interactive design and/or development?

Thank you,

Marc

There are only 3 PhD programs that I am aware of - 1) IT Copenhagen;
2) University of Teeside; 3) University of Utrecht.

I believe all of them are research degrees. I am pretty sure you don't
have to be on campus to do the work, but you will have to contact them
directly.

I'll also point out that if you are simply looking for a terminal degree in the field, there are some MFA programs out there as well (I know SCAD offers one, for example). Depending on where you are, that can stand in as the equivalent of a PhD if you just need the academic credentials.
