The Second ACM International Workshop on Multimedia Technologies for
Distance Leaning (MTDL 2010)

Firenze, Italy, October 29, 2010 http://MTDL2010.mine.tku.edu.tw

In conjunction with ACM Multimedia 2010

Multimedia technologies and networking infrastructure have changed
human social behavior. One typical example is education. The impact of
distance learning to traditional universities in particular allows
educational professionals to rethink about how to efficiently and
effectively using multimedia technologies to improve instruction, as
well as to encourage students to learn. Although multimedia
technologies have already been used widely in e-learning, various
considerations should be carefully addressed from both pedagogical and
technological perspectives, to ensure the successful incorporation of
these technologies in e-learning. This ACM workshop aims to discuss
problems, current studies, and solutions in how to use multimedia and
communication technologies to improve e-learning. Especially,
presentations should address the difference between using and without
using multimedia technologies in education. Practical solutions are
encouraged, although pedagogical theories may be used to support the
solutions. The conference proceedings will be published by ACM. Topics
of interests include but are not limited to the following:

- Efficient Authoring Methods for Instruction Creation/Generation
- Management of Multimedia Learning Objects
- Multimedia Edutainment Technologies
- Multimedia Technologies for Collaborative Learning
- Multimedia Technologies for Game-based Learning
- Multimedia Technologies for Mobile/Situated Learning
- Multimodal Interactions for e-Learning
- Pedagogical Issues of using Multimedia Technologies in e-Learning
- Real-time Delivery of Multimedia Instructions
- Retrieval of Multimedia Learning Objects
- Server and System Architecture for Multimedia Instructions
- Usability Study of Multimedia Learning Objects

BioS-Play: Workshop on Multiuser and Social Biosignal Adaptive Games
and Playful Applications
(K.U.Leuven, 15 September 2010) workshop in conjunction with the Fun
and Games Conference 2010

In a nutshell: System adaptation or enhanced communication based on
biosignal data, or sensor data and system metrics, which captures user
behavior.

Target domain: Social and multiplayer games and playful applications.

For researchers, theoreticians, and game designers.

Send 2 to 4-page ACM SIGCHI format position papers to
biosplay at affectivegaming.info by May 24, 2010. See also:
http://www.affectivegaming.info/biosplay/

CALL FOR PAPERS

We invite you to submit position papers relating to the use of
physiological, biological, or behavioral signals in social and
multiuser games and entertainment applications. For this workshop the
understood definition of biosignals is them being psychophysiologal
signals such as EEG, EMG, GSR, or heart rate, but also pressure
sensors, motion and gesture sensors, eye trackers, or behavioral
gameplay metrics data. The workshop will focus on discussions
pertaining to the design implications gathered from biometric data as
well as methodologies concerning the application and analysis of the
data.

Submissions are invited on the following topics (though not restricted
to these topics):

- Related biometric or affective input gaming prototypes
- Experimental studies using biosignals
- Design proposals for games using affective input, adaptive input
processing or biosignals for evaluation or interaction
- Conceptual analysis of biosignal data
- Related philosophical considerations (ethics, social impact,
phenomenlogy)

Submissions are expected in the form of two to four-page position
papers, describing the area of research and motivation to join the
workshop. We expect that you will also describe your expectations of
the workshop.

Papers should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI guidelines (HCI
archive format), see http://chi2010.org/authors/format.html#archiveformat
.

Position papers should be sent to biosplay at affectivegaming.info

Participants will be selected on the basis of the relevance of their
work and their interests and familiarity with the topic.

Accepted papers will be collected to a publication, which will be
published by Helsinki Institute for Information Technology. We will
also consider possibility to organize a joint journal publication
related to workshop themes.

DEADLINES

24 May 2010: Workshop submission deadline.

27 June 2010: Workshop acceptance/rejection deadline.

10 July 2010: Authors submit to organizers camera-ready versions of
papers.

15 September 2010: Workshop at Fun and Games 2010.

3rd International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling

01-03 November 2010, Edinburgh, UK
http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/icids2010

Submission Deadline: June 14, 2010
--------------------------------------------------------

The advent of interactive graphical systems lays the basis for a new
mode of story-telling realized as Interactive Digital Storytelling
(IDS), applicable to interactive entertainment, computer games,
education, therapy and other interactive digital applications. It
raises opportunities and addresses challenges for redefining the
experience of narrative through interactive simulations of computer-
generated story worlds.

IDS thus offers interesting new possibilities for games, training, and
learning, through the enriching of virtual characters with intelligent
behavior, the collaboration of humans and machines in the creative
process, and the combination of narrative knowledge and user activity
in interactive artifacts. In order to create novel applications, in
which users play a significant role together with digital characters
and other autonomous elements, new concepts for Human-Computer
Interaction have to be developed. Novel conceptions from theoretical
work in the Humanities and interactive art must also be incorporated.

IDS draws on many aspects of Computer Science, and specifically on
Artificial Intelligence, with topics such as narrative intelligence,
automatic dialogue- and dramamanagement, cognitive robotics and smart
graphics. In order to process stories in real time, existing modes of
storytelling must be formalized into computable models, combining
ideas from narratology with computer programming. This has so far
resulted in a technological complexity largely inaccessible to
potential creators of IDS and end-users. There is therefore a need for
new authoring concepts and tools supporting the creation of dynamic
story models, allowing for rich and meaningful interaction with the
content. Finally, there is a need for theoretical foundations
considering the integration of so far disjunctive approaches and
cultures.

We welcome research papers, case studies and demonstrations –
including interactive narrative art - presenting new scientific
results, innovative technologies, creative insights, best practice
showcases, or improvements to existing techniques and approaches in
the multidisciplinary research field of interactive digital
storytelling and its related application areas, e.g. games, virtual/
online worlds, e-learning, edutainment, and entertainment.

Suggested research topics for contributions include, but are not
limited to:

* Interactive Storytelling Theory
* Virtual Characters and Agents
* Environments and Graphical Effects
* Interactive Cinematography
* Design of Sound Interactivity
* Story Generation and Drama Management
* New Authoring Modes
* Narrativity in Digital Games
* Mixed Realities and Mobiles
* Tools for Interactive Storytelling
* Emotion Design for Interactive Storytelling
* Non-Visual Senses for Interactive Storytelling
* Social and Cognitive Approaches for Interactive Storytelling
* Semantic knowledge for Interactive Storytelling
* Real-time techniques for Interactive Storytelling
* Collaborative environments for Interactive Storytelling
