[game_edu] game_edu Digest, Vol 85, Issue 7

I don't think we're *quite* doing the kind of teaching that you're curious
about, but I certainly have thoughts, since I'm trying to do a different
thing, albeit one that I think is important to game education.

I work with and on Gamestar Mechanic. Our team has co-taught with teachers,
and have several years of research on the tool, both qualitative and
quantitative, on how it gets used. I've taught numerous game design
workshops using a bunch of tools, and for folks besides just Gamestar.

The reason I bring this up specifically is that from that research, we've
seen not only the decisions that you've noted in the choices of engine and
content creation, but also choices in tools for different sorts of game
education. We've seen (and helped) teachers make different choices for:

- teaching design vs. programming vs. computational thinking
- teaching game design vs. core curricular content *via* game making
- teaching media literacy (media creation tools) vs. media literacy
(critical analysis of games)
- teaching game making vs. game design vs. professional game production

as well as decisions based on the practical context of the classroom, such
as:

- time available for the lesson or curriculum
- time available for learning the tools vs. the material being taught
with the tools
- the hardware available or desired (PCs, iOS devices, tabletop/board
games, physical games, consoles)

I'm happy to discuss this more off-list, but I think it's worth sharing some
of the factors *for* making decisions here where folks could remind me of
issues I've forgotten or not yet seen.
