*Tenure / Tenure-track Faculty Position, Games and Simulation Arts and 
Sciences*

The Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Program at Rensselaer 
Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY invites applications, nominations, and 
expressions of interest for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position, 
at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. We seek 
outstanding applicants with a record of successful collegiate teaching, 
creative practice, and research in digital games. The selected candidate 
will join a diverse, interdisciplinary, interdepartmental faculty whose 
research spans game technology, game studies, design, interactive 
narrative, educational games, serious games, psychological and cognitive 
dimensions of games, indie game production, and games as an art form.

The successful candidate must have experience in creating games and a 
working knowledge of current game engines and development environments 
such as Unity3D or Unreal Engine 4. The faculty member in this position 
will teach courses in game design and development, advise undergraduate 
and graduate students, perform university and professional service, and 
will contribute to the development of a new graduate program in GSAS. 
The ability to successfully seek external funding and forge corporate 
and foundation partnerships is required.

The GSAS Program is consistently ranked as one of the top games programs 
in North America, with an interdisciplinary curriculum combining 
practical and theoretical approaches to game development across multiple 
disciplines. The successful candidate will contribute to the 
undergraduate program and formation of a graduate program in Games and 
Simulation Arts and Sciences. Responsibilities include teaching courses 
such as Introduction to Game Design; Game Development; Game Studies; 
UI/UX design for Games; 3D modeling and game art; and higher level 
graduate technical and special topics courses in the area of the 
candidate’s specialty.

To be considered at any level, candidates must hold a terminal degree, 
or foreign degree equivalent, in Game Design, Game Studies, 
Digital/Interactive Media, Computer Science, Art and Technology, or a 
related discipline, and be able to exhibit, through their 
accomplishments, promise of future distinction in relevant scholarly or 
artistic practice. Candidates will be considered at the Associate 
Professor rank if they also possess a record of excellence in 
scholarship as demonstrated by an emerging national or international 
reputation, a level of high quality in educational activities including 
teaching and advising, and a significant level of service to the 
department, the Institute, and the profession as is gained through a 
minimum of three (3) or more years in a tenure track position. To be 
considered at the Professor rank, candidates must be an academic leader, 
possessing a nationally or internationally recognized record of 
excellence in scholarly or artistic practice, a sustained level of high 
quality in educational activities that go beyond teaching and advising, 
and a sustained level of service to the department, the Institute, and 
the profession, all of which is gained through at least six (6) years in 
a tenure track or tenured faculty position. Evidence of teaching 
effectiveness at the college level is required. Prior experience in 
interdisciplinary research and artistic collaboration is preferred.

Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest 
technological university. With approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 
2,500 graduate students from around the world, the university programs 
at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Rensselaer is located 
in Troy, NY in New York State’s Hudson Valley. The university’s Curtis 
R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) offers 
opportunities for creative interdisciplinary research in the arts, 
performance technologies, science, and engineering.
