The Department of Art+Design in the College of Arts, Media and Design at
Northeastern University invites applications for an open rank search for
one or more positions in media arts/game design. We seek candidates with a
national/ international record of excellence in research and/or creative
practice in media arts, in one or more areas including but not limited to:
animation, art games, generative design, psychology of play, games for
impact, interactive narrative, and digital storytelling. The ideal
candidate should have a strong track record of interdisciplinary research
and collaboration in their fields of practice. Candidates should be able to
teach courses related to media arts/game design in our growing
undergraduate and graduate degree programs: BFAs in Media Arts, in Games,
and in Digital Art and Game Design, a BS in Computer Science and Game
Development, and an MS in Game Science and Design. The successful candidate
will have the opportunity to work with other faculty to design and shape
new interdisciplinary PhD programs within the College and across the
University. The appointment has an anticipated start date of August 28,
2017.



*Context*

The College of Arts, Media and Design has a unique combination of
disciplines, including Architecture, Art+Design, Communication Studies,
Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, Music, and Theatre. It is a
collaborative community within the university that acts as a catalyst for

The Department of Art+Design has expanded rapidly in the last five years
and now encompasses 34 full time faculty, over 500 undergraduate majors,
and nearly 70 graduate students in fast-growing Master’s programs such as
the MFA in Information Design and Visualization and MS in Game Science and
Design. Media Arts is one of three divisions within Art+Design, the other
two being Art (e.g., visual arts and studio art) and Design (e.g.,
information and experience design). The BS in Computer Science and Game
development and the MS in Game Science and Design are interdisciplinary
degrees offered jointly between the College of Arts, Media and Design and
the College of Computer and Information Sciences. See:

Media Arts and Games faculty engage in interdisciplinary research that span
collaborations within different fields, including design, computer science,
health sciences, behavior science, and engineering. They have been
successful in attracting funding from the National Science Foundation, the
Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, the Intelligence Advanced
Research Projects Agency, and the National Institutes of Health. Teaching
and research labs have recently been upgraded with the latest
state-of-the-art equipment, and more investments in space are anticipated
as we grow and expand our research and education. For details on both media

*Qualifications*

The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) by the
appointment start date and must have a strong record of excellent in media
arts, and be poised to offer a significant contribution to the field of
games at Northeastern. Candidates are expected to teach at the graduate and
undergraduate levels, and must have a well-developed research agenda and/or
creative practice that will inform and advance current trends in the field.
