ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ACM ISS 2016), formerly known as
the ACM International Conference on Interactive Tabletops and
Surfaces (ITS), welcomes original, high-quality research and industry
contributions that advance the state-of-the-art in the area of
interactive surfaces and spaces (including tabletops, large displays,
mobile, and mini devices). We embrace innovations in a wide variety of
areas including design, software, hardware, understanding of use, and
applications or deployments of interactive surfaces.

Workshop W01: Collaboration Meets Interactive Surfaces and Spaces
(CMIS): Walls, Tables, Mobiles, and Wearables

This workshop aims to exchange experiences regarding collaborative
user interface design techniques that were designed for, or adapted to
people involved  in all kinds of collaborative activities, either
remote or co-located. Since many of these techniques are highly
focused on specific target groups,  a further aim is to extract
general principles and to generate guidelines for bringing effective
collaboration  around interactive surfaces.

Researchers and designers are invited who have been involved in one or
more  design-oriented project(s) involving the study of collaborative
activities  around all sorts of interactive surfaces and
devices. Those wishing  to attend will be required to submit a
work-in-progress  or position paper. Wherever appropriate, submitting
a short companion video describing the work is strongly
encouraged. Please  provide a Youtube or Vimeo URL at the author's
convenience. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to:

- Design and evaluation of collaborative environments with interactive
 surfaces  and devices, either remotely or co-located;
- Collaborative applications on interactive surfaces for different
 domains (e.g.  meeting rooms, 3D visualization, mechanical
 engineering, medical visualizations, emergency response scenarios);
- Communication, cooperation and coordination as well as social protocols;
- Interactive surfaces and devices to enhance spatial perception of
 content  and/or support navigation during collaboration activities;
- Issues when moving from desktop-based collaboration to large-scale
 walls,  tabletops, touch-based mobile devices, and wearable computing
 devices;
- Integration of different devices and surfaces (Walls, Tables,
 Mobiles, Wearables) for collaboration;
- Physical navigation and interaction between different devices;
- Collaboration paradigms and user interface designs that address
 enhancement of collaborative activities using interactive surfaces,
 walls, tabletops, mobiles, and wearables;
- Collaborative sense making and visual analytics with different
 interactive surfaces and devices;
- Theories and applications of social science for interactive surfaces
 and devices.

Workshop W02: Cross-Surface: Challenges and Opportunities of Spatial
and Proxemic Interaction

In this workshop, we will review and discuss open issues, technical
challenges and  conceptual models for multi-device spatial or proxemic
interaction. We aim to bring together researchers, students and
practitioners working on  technical infrastructures, studies and
designs of spatial interfaces,  or domain specific multi-device
applications that use space  as a unit of analysis. We focus
specifically on analysing how  such interfaces, tools and tracking
technology can be  deployed “in the wild”. The workshop will
facilitate knowledge  exchange about the current state of spatial and
proxemic  interactive systems, identify application domains and
enabling technologies  for cross-surface interactions in the wild, and
establish a research  community to develop effective strategies for
successful design of  cross-device interactions. The objective of this
workshop is to map  the potentials and challenges derived from the
participants’ experiences in  designing, building and studying systems
in and for the wild from a  researchers’ and practitioners’
perspective. The potentials and challenges will be organized around
three main topics:

- Conceptual Models: For Spatial Interactions – How can we
  conceptualize,  describe and model multi-device interaction within a
  space?  Which social, spatial or psychological theories and
  frameworks can be employ to help characterize spatial interactions?
  How do  we translate such theories to interaction design, system
  research  and multi-device representations?

- Spatial Tracking “in the wild”- Which tracking technologies and
tools can be used to support “in the wild” spatial interfaces and
designs? How can these technologies be deployed, democratized and
shared with a broader audience?

- Control and Intelligibility – How do people make sense of spatially
  aware cross-surface ecologies? How can we support discoverability
  and learnability of interactions, inform users of action
  possibilities and provide  feedback about cross-surface connections?

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Cross-device interaction
- Interaction challenges with multi- and cross-surface interactions
- Discoverability of possible cross-device interactions
- Multi-device ubicomp ecologies
- Interactions across multiple surfaces
- Cross-device interactions using both mobiles and wearables (e.g., smartwatches)

We invite your submission to our workshop on Spatial Interaction in
Virtual/Augmented Reality and Games, to be held at ISS 2016.  We seek
original position papers or  technical papers documenting research
contributions, practice  and experience, or novel applications, from
all areas of spatial interaction relating to games or VR. User
interface evaluations are strongly encouraged for all technical publications.

Topics should be somehow linked to games and or
virtual/reality. Unlisted but strongly related topics are also welcome.

Workshop W04: Immersive Analytics: Exploring Future Interaction and
Visualization Technologies for Data Analytics

Due to the recent advances in immersive technologies (VR, AR, large
displays, tangible surfaces, etc.), we see new opportunities to using
these technologies to analyse and explore data. Visual analytics is
concerned with analytical  reasoning facilitated by interactive visual
interfaces. This definition is agnostic of the actual interface
devices employed by visual analysis systems. Nevertheless, the
affordances of the display and input devices used for analyzing data
strongly affect the experience of the users of such systems, and so,
their degree of  engagement and productivity. However, a systematic
approach to developing visual analytic tools that move beyond the
desktop is yet lacking.

In this call, we are looking for innovative research, design, and
view-points,  mature or work-in-progress, that fall into or are
related to the following topics:  Real-world VA/AR, Collaboration,
Hybrid 2D/3D, Affordances for Immersion, Changing Technologies,
Application Areas, Platforms and Toolkits. We call this new research
thrust ``Immersive Analytics", a topic that will explore the
applicability and  development of emerging user-interface technologies
for creating more engaging experiences and seamless work-flows for
data analysis applications.
