[CIS PIDD] [cis-pidd] Experiences in using inactivated typhoid vaccine

S. typhi polysaccharide, is the vaccine you want to use.  From the package insert "Safety and effectiveness of Typhim Vi vaccine have been established in children 2 years of age and older."  It has been very helpful in the limited number of patients we have immunized.  One 5yo who was on IVIG for "soft" indications responded very well to the vaccine and was taken off of Ig with no apparent increase in infections.  I just gave it to a 2yo but I have no results on that child.

The MCW lab is the only one I know that runs the test commercially.  If you work out of an institution your clinical lab administration may have to agree to send the samples and pass on the cost of the testing to the patient's insurance.

We offer clinical testing of the S. Typhi response.  We need pre and post serum.  Instructions are on the MCW website (http://www.mcw.edu/AllergyAsthmaImmunology/PatientCare/CIRL.htm) or you can call the lab directly (414-456-4165)

We have done many CVID patients and patients on IG replacement and it has been very useful in predicting defects in antibody production.  We have done some children...they also seem to respond but I don't think we have enough at this point to publish or demonstrate any age dependent affects.

I know that there was discussion of this at CIS last year, but I was curious about everyone's experience in using inactivated typhoid vaccine for testing polysaccharide responses.  Has anyone accrued data on responses in pediatric patients?   Where are people sending the titers?

It would be wonderful to retire pneumovax for diagnostic use...
