I have been selling a CAPWATCH unit for a few years now that can be programmed for the LAT LONG of the street address of the building where it is installed and it really eliminates over alerting by the weather service and because it only goes off if you are located within the polygonpeople pay more attention when it does go off.

While the Indiana law is neat, there’s no evidence that it has saved lives There is no requirement to keep the radio plugged in and operational, and even in 2023 (16 years after polygon warnings begin) they still don’t use the polygon. They alert based on the whole county, and it doesn’t take too many false alarms plus “wrong area” wakeups to get those unplugged.

National Weather Service issued a tornado warning about 11 minutes before 

the EF4 tornado touched down in Rolling Fork MS.

  

Why didn't people living in poor communities learn about the warning?

  

Thing I learned, Indiana pass a law requiring all new mobile homes have a 

weather radio installed -- similar to requirements for a smoke alarm. Poor 

communities likely can't afford to buy or maintain them.

  

Outdoor warning sirens have various problems (cost, reliability, 

asleep and indoor locations).
