There is no lip sync in 8VSB. Its digitally perfect! But the latency in home
receivers varies all over the place. The Masked Engineer (TV Technology) had
an article on this a couple months ago. At home I hear a worse problem
stream splicing cracks and huge volume level changes between local and network, but
the ______ at NBC, CBS, ABC don't seem to give a hoot. Locally NBC doesn't
even have a MC operator, its switched from NYC and there can be no sound, no
picture, glitches, etc for up to 20 minutes before anyone notices and sends the
maintenance tech to go fix. We've been running mono audio on analog since June
18th, stereo on digital, not one phone call complaining the analog is not in
stereo. (due to the 12.5 KV transformer burning and putting 600V+ on
everything, taking out every PS, regulator, fuse, breaker, etc). So we won't bother
with 5.1 either since viewers don't even know if its stereo or mono, they
certainly won't miss not having 5.1 surround sound. Says a lot about the public
ability to know what their TV is doing. I would factitiously say, if you have a
lip sync problem, sit closer or father from the TV set until the sound delay
equals the viewing distance. Make sure the chair has casters.
