[SBE] We should all say something...

Actually,,,

what the FCC expects is that cellular telephones, with their new 8/24/48 power requirement, will be part of enhanced EAS and that is where info will come from. The CAP rules will enable almost any mass comm device to be integrated for dissemination of emergency comunications. Broadcast radio and TV are somewhere in the middle rather than at the top of the FCC's concern in emergency situations. The FCC sees satellite and cable as an alternative to legacy broadcast. Terrestrial broadcasters seem to have cut themselves out of the picture. We complained so much about the cost of community service and fought so hard against EAS enforcement, main studios, 24/7 opeators, required public content and mandates such as generators that the FCC found another industry that they expect will play by the rules. Cell companies have manned NOCs that broadcasters do not have. Cell companies do make provisions for backup power that broadcasters do not. It is a damn shame that the FCC seems to think less and less of the need for broadcast. Ironically, a portion of the spectrum freed up by DTV is being used for enhanced public safety communications.

BTW, ditto for analog radio. What we have here with this television technology evolution is different than when we went?from BW to color. The systems were compatible back then. I think that?is important because these receivers will be operated in a disadvantaged situation (i.e. no antenna gain or height).... From the test evaluations I have read, many of the DTV tuner designs are built on the cheap with poor performance; single conversion types. One can't demodulate the bit stream if the front end is lousy. So someone in the tent or camper ?better be able to climb a tree to point the UHF Yagi!? For us HAMS ?it's another Field Day but for Joe Average and Family it's a nightmare.> > > > I believe?the next disaster, be it national or local, that someone?is going to be out of luck if all we have is digital as we know it.
