I have done this using VPN control of the automation. Have the external 
audio source (phone, RPU, etc.) on the switcher feeding the EAS to STL 
chain. Talent turns on that feed whenever a break in is needed, and then 
restarts automation when finished. It does take a stable Internet 
connection, something that is occasionally difficult to get in the 
hinterlands.
This has been used from music venues 60+ mi. from the studio, as well as 
a couple of months of morning show in the same city while the host was 
at home recuperating from surgery.
