We can tell you are angry.  I am sorry you have taken offense to our list objectives.  I truly hope your passion for the Society is reflected in your active chapter participation (I don't have the chapter rosters handy to verify this) or that you have interest in promoting your perspectives at the national level in the near future either by running for national office or attending and participating in our regular, open board meetings.  We need passionate, committed individuals to lead our group efforts. 

You are correct that sidebars during chapter meetings are not uncommon. The SBE Chat list is exactly that. A way to collect a group of interested individuals to discuss a topic outside the scope of the meeting in such a way that the greater group is not disrupted. 

Our moderator, Chriss Scherer, has been charged with the responsibility of moderating this online meeting and diverting potential sidebars to the appropriate venue. Since the Roundtable list objective is stated at sign-up and has been expressed a number of times here, diversion of topics outside the scope of the list should not be unexpected.  He has continued to perform this important task in spite of occasional chastisement from a vocal few subscribers. I hope that he will continue to the benefit of all subscribers.

Unilaterally applying a "filter rule," without any warning, goes a little
beyond the pale.

Since you consider this an ongoing 24-hour chapter meeting, perhaps you
might care to remember all the sidebars that regularly occur at chapter
meetings.  This is one meeting that cannot be governed by Robert's Rules of
Order.

The last time I checked, the membership decided what went or didn't go here,
and not one person.  Perhaps we should use a little of the 60+ dollars we
spend every year and mail out ballots for the membership to decide what can
or cannot be said or discussed on the roundtable.

You don't have enough users of this roundtable to worry about replication or
supplication.  Justifying censorship or unilateral action with those ideas
just fails, my friend.

This is/was the 4th of July.  I've been a dues-paying member since 1989.
You will not tell me what I can say about our Independence Day, nor will you
dictate to anyone else.  I also don't believe I've seen too many posts from
you in the last few months that I've really been paying attention.

I will repeat my quote from John Adams so you shan't be able to say you
didn't learn anything from my post:

Before we rag anymore on Chriss:

I see a real irony in that we've just been having a great discussion about
the Society developing a RBP compendium, however as soon as a standard is
invoked, as Chriss did by moderating the list, we get flamed for being
restrictive. 

The purpose of this list is outlined at the subscription point of the SBE
web site. I like to consider this an ongoing, 24-hour, chapter meeting.
Discussions of hobbies, events in history, or casting aspersions on a fellow
engineer's role in serving our country would not (should not) occur during
an SBE meeting. It should not happen here. 

Chriss has needed to repeat this guideline several times recently.

Before and after regular chapter meetings (like those at chapter 5 here in
Atlanta) there exists the fellowship which many of us crave. This is where
the myriad of other interests we share are frequently discussed. As a result
of your comments we've created an online version of this "fellowship
opportunity" on the SBE Chat list. 

There are, of course, many opportunities online for social interaction
between broadcast technical personnel:  Barry's lists, Yahoo, Facebook, and
Linkedin Groups,  Ham radio nets, etc.
  
The Roundtable does not seek to supplant those opportunities and, as a
result is deliberately managed so it won't replicate them.

Please do not be insulted when our moderator suggests a topic be moved to
the chat area. Understand that he is simply helping this "business" list
remain on-point and relevant. This helps keep the roundtable an effective
resource for the many members who subscribe.
