[SBE] Congratulations DTV

Ed -

This could morph into Film Islands/Chains too.

My favorite story is in a terminal room with racks full of RCA stuff. In those days the B+ Supply came from a separate supply that powered a number of pieces of other gear. It was a real heat producer with several series regulator tubes...(you always put these at the top of the rack). This was back in the days when you came in about an hour prior to sign on to fire up everything, run the test tape on all the tape-machine etc. Those power supplies had a time delay in them, and we shut down the racks at night. About 90 seconds after turning on the power to the racks and heading to load up the coffee maker, the time delay clicked in and one of those big electrolytics exploded..............WHAM !....A morning that lives on in this old head.

Spend a number of years maintaining those beasts...and folks wonder why I like Radio !!!

Clay,

you left off getting pneumonia from the breeze of an empty 2" reel at full fast wind speed, or possibly loosing fingers in the reel,

or learning the difference between in stopping a fast winding VTR: 2"..let the tape end go through the head stack, and 1", slow it down and hand thread it out of the head stack. Doing otherwise could cost the station $1,000s and cost you a job.

And the can of compressed air for keeping an old RCA 2" running. Or running nearly 5 mins of bars and tones to get the thing stable before air.

The sprint across a tape room when trying to align gun shot sounds to change reels.

The whine of some of those machines coming up to speed sounded a whole lot like the big fans in a parking garage.

Thanks Mimi -

I was going to say something about the front porch also...

Ah hah....Some 'tape talk'

Lets long remember -

> The difference between scalloping and skewing
> The 10 second pre-roll (before the discovery of the 2nd use for head-override)
> The sounds of a TCR100 and how it reminded you of a lube-bay at a truck stop.
> Those little Red boxes
> Lifting a BIG reel of 2 inch onto a machine (in those green boxes)
> The foot switch for break release.
> Attenpting to edit
> Ampex and RCA
> The wonderful contributions of Allen

Oh the memories .....I could go on and on.

Guess we can all sit on the 'back porch' and pine for the good old days.

I just watched live coverage of 3 Atlanta analog shutdowns at 12:30pm today.

WAGA (5 Analog)
WXIA (11 Analog)
WSB (2 Analog)

Congratulations everyone on moving to DTV.

Don't forget to rescan!
