[SBE] TV Audio on HD-3

My only concern is this could put pressure on NOAA that we need to avoid. I don't want any of this to backfire.

All very valid points on making a profit, although I don't see an issue if more than one station wants to put NOAA on their HD multicast channels. Here in Orlando we have three main channels running Hip Hop, and we even have two different HD2 channels running Gospel music. Having NOAA on two HD3 channels is a waste of a channel quite frankly, but no harm is done as far as I can see.

Steve -

I completely agree that putting NOAA on an HD3 is a good idea. However, in this day, managers are going to want to know how to make a profit with it....and you can't blame them. The other issue is management as to who. More than one NWS/HD3 per market would not be wise...and who makes that call? What do you do if a Class A FM puts it on and then a Class C, in the same market, wants to do it too?.

Who is going to administrate this?

I personally think it's a good idea to run NOAA on at least one HD3 in a market. Driving down the road if you see bad weather you could turn to it. I must say though, that we did have a local NPR affiliate do that for a few days and it really sounded out of place. Don't know what it was, but it was like going to the movies to watch "UP", and seeing a preview for "Dragged To Hell" come on.

I have circulated this at various levels at NOAA - will advise.

Considering the fragile economic situation we find ourselves in-

the biggest hurdle I see is going to be the broadcaster that

wants to know why or what's in it for him.

I would think that most broadcasters today would do anything

to help the bottom line. Not sure broadcasting weather would

be a way to do this....unless - you could have a commercial

sponsor or perhaps the way they do it on NCE facilities,

have it under-written.

Kent/Everyone:

Great idea!

Clay may want to contact Herb White at NOAA to get his reaction to Kent's suggestion.

The idea of retransmitting for emergency information. Might be a co-branding or even sales opportunity: The local TV that wants the "source of emergency information" image could either trade or buy an HD channel. This could, be even more important with the introduction of the portable HDRadio receivers.

It is also be interesting to consider NOAA Weather Radio on HD-3.

I like that idea Steve, could be great cross promotion between TV and Radio.
Put a camera on your morning show on a DTV channel and the TV audio on the
HD channel. I've always wondered also if it would be possible to get at
least one radio station in a market to retransmit the NOAA weather radio on
the HD-2 or 3 channel also.that would be truly using the channel to serve
the community.
