Sounds like a classic bad pigtail or contaminated connector problem.

R&R Pigtail - Clean all connectors - try again.

  Forgot to mention, took RX to studio, made a wire dipole antenna and rx was stable with signal level between -50 and -85 (changed by moving antnena) with no variances over 24 hrs.  So problem seems site specific.
