Pace is where to go for rework stations. $1k is too low, closer to $2k for 3 channel stations. Full blown stations can cost as much as $5k. Hako makes good stuff, but I prefer Pace as they seem to support every piece of gear they ever made. Not so with Hako. Also Pace usually doesn't require external air.

No knowledge on IR vs. hot air, but the majority of rework stations seem to be hot air.

That said, check E-Bay for systems. I bought a newer 2 channel solder/desolder unit for $250 shipped. Saw a full blown system (the close to $5k type) go for about $1k. Someone got one heck of a deal. Be careful when shopping E-Bay as there are lots of supplies with no tools. The tools are right pricey if you have to buy them new.

This may be more of a question for the TV and repair folks. I am looking for some guidance on the purpose of a BGA rework station. Anyone with experience?

Do you prefer IR or hot air?

Any manufactuers that are preferred, or to run away from?

Any recommended vendors?

Ideally I want a unit for under $1k that includes the ability to rework, not just reflow the target. Rework usually includes lift, support and place of the chip.

Off line reply is fine.

Thanks
