[SBE] Hamnets Thread

Barry Thomas, CPBE CBNT barryt at barryt.org

I was a little worried when I posted the question.  I wanted to make sure were not giving a slight to our "authorized" SBE efforts and also put the new IRLP conversation into context for this poor non-ham.
The response was not what I expected.  It was, in fact a very important and interesting thread showing an issue that may need some attention.  We want to be inclusive and welcoming with all of our work.  The Chapter of The Air can be a way to earn recert credit, a critical means to connect members who are not near in-person chapters (that description applies to so many of us), but it's also a way we teach people who we are!
Like our in person chapter meetings, this meeting should showcase the professional approach and problem-solving, get-it-done attitude that typifies the SBE member.  To further demonstrate how SBE members are the best informed, best certified, most effective professionals in our industry!  SBE members make media technology work!
I know that Vinny and John monitor this list but I'm copying this digest to both of them.  I suspect this might be worth some discussion and attention by our chapter liaison or other board members.
Thanks so much for the candor and your input which makes our Society better!

Barry,
From an experience one of my former engineers had with the person then
in charge of "Chapter of the Air", the reflector system is much more
inclusive. This engineer was told that if he was a broadcast engineer,
but not an Extra Class ham, he probably shouldn't call himself an engineer.
That kind of elitist attitude pretty well soured both of us. Instead of
giving a reason to upgrade it caused the opposite reaction in my case. I
have enough going on already, why take time to become one of "those guys".

Rod - I share Rod's view below.

I also share your promotion of SBE nets on EchoLink, IRLP and how about D-STAR?

These of course are all accessable via a TECHNICIAN Ham license and are certainly more accessable to all so licensed hams.

For 20 years+ I was only a Tech Heavy (5 WPM) until the FCC obsoleted Morse Code altogther.
Now a proud EXTRA LITE (5WPM).  All I operate is VHF/UHF and these VOIP nets.
I found the Extra theory test a mild challenge - in fact is has been SBE gradfathered as equivalent at the
CBT Level - same as the old First Class/Lifetime General FCC Operator's License.
That is quite a buit LESS than the SBE tests above the CBT!

So I vote for full VOIP net access to the SBE HamNet!
