I just use a simple double wipe 40 pin IC socket as a 'sacrifice' pin 
header - works a treat, and protects the pod UUT plug very well...

Your idea will also work well, and could be used in place of the 
extension female to male 40-pin connector that Fluke sold that allowed 
one to easily get at the CPU pins (or add circuits to for various 
situations).
