Here's just an example of a modern VFD:

It requires only 5V power supply, has built in RS-232 interface (looks like you can directly connect the Fluke, the levels it understands as high and low for RS-232 can handle TTL levels.
It also shows the characters it can display in the table...ASCII plus more.
Not saying it's 100% compatible but it should do the texts, wonder about inverse characters though. It's also a lot smaller but this is just an example.
