I just want to be clear what is happening.  Before you changed anything you
were getting an RTC failure message but the system continued to boot
normally.  Correct?

Since you made the above changes the system now hangs after displaying the
RTC message?

The same happens if you try to force a floppy boot using F2 F4?

I have no personal experience with the NVRAM.
