60x60 is launching a brand new mix for 2011 the 60x60 Athena Mix in
celebration of Women’s History Month.

Embracing Diversity / Expanding Horizons – the 60x60 Athena Mix will
premiere 60 electronic compositions 60 seconds long by 60 women composers
and sound artists for Women History Month March 2nd 2011 at Murray State
University, Kentucky

In the tradition of 60x60, Vox Novus and the Athena Festival are joining
forces in 2011 creating a brand new mix for the project, the 60x60 Athena
Mix. This special 60x60 Athena Mix will be comprised of 60 electronic
compositions 60 seconds long by 60 women composers and sound artists.

The 60x60 Project is a one-hour-long show made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded
pieces by 60 different composers, each piece a minute in length or shorter.
Highlighting the work of a great many composers, 60x60 testifies to the
vibrancy of contemporary composition by present a diverse array of styles,
aesthetics, and techniques being used today.

This year 60x60 had 200 submissions across the globe for this historical
mix, the first 60x60 showcasing the works of talented women. The Athena Mix
features a cross section of what is happening in electronic music today,
with works from legendary composers, sound artists, and emerging composers
alike. The Athena Mix presents a microcosm of the incredible contributions
women have made to electronic music throughout the globe.

The 60x60 Athena Mix will premier at the Athena Festival March 2nd 2011 at
Murray State University. The Athena Festival is a unique biennial event
which is devoted to the performance of music composed by women. Alex Shapiro
will be the guest composer for the 2011 Athena Festival and this year's
theme is "Embracing Diversity - Expanding Horizons". The Athena Mix will be
performed on March 2, 2011, at 1:30pm in the Performing Arts Hall (PAH)

“Many people are often uncertain which verb to apply to their experience of
attending a concert. “I saw a concert,” one says, then catches himself: “No,
I heard it.” For the 75-year-old composer Pauline Oliveros, the best choice
would be the more active “I listened to it.” The distinction between
listening and mere passive hearing has been a focus of her activities for
decades; in 1985 she founded something called the Deep Listening
Institute.”- New York Times

"Joan La Barbara has brought her adventures on American contemporary music's
wildest frontiers, while her own compositions and shamanistic 'sound
paintings' place the soprano voice at the outer limits of human experience".

"One of new music's truly free spirits," (Village Voice) and a "remarkable
experimentalist," (New York Times) Eve Beglarian is a composer, performer,
and audio producer whose music has been described as "an eclectic and
wide-open series of enticements." (Los Angeles Times)

Judith Shatin
"This was highly inventive music on every level; hugely enjoyable and deeply
involving with a constant sense of surprise..." -The Washington Post

Mary Jane Leach
“An acoustic "Through the Looking Glass" world based on sound that the
performer is not making.” - The New Yorker

Maggi Payne
"Maggi Payne's...processing of car and airplane sounds into a scintillating
harmonic continuum captures some part of that comfortless contemplative
attitude the desert inspires." —Kyle Gann, Village Voice (Airwaves
(realities))

Laurie Spiegel
"Laurie Spiegel is one of those rare composers in whom head and heart, left
brain and right brain, logic and intuition, merge and even exchange roles."
- Kyle Gann "Her mature works, which are somewhat Romantic in style, are
characterized by emotional intensity" - The New Grove Dictionary of
American Music, Vol. IV

Milica Paranosic
Milica is one of Kyle Gann's “Favorite Women Composers of All Time.”
