Thomas Piercy and Irfan Tengku. This episode will be presenting the
works of composers Jay Anthony Gach and David Evan Jones. “ELEMENTS of
STYLE” by Jay Anthony Gach and “Daichavoza Maiko” by David Evan Jones
are performed by clarinetist Thomas Piercy and pianist Irfan Tengku.
Jay Anthony Gach’s original concert music has been critically acclaimed
as: “music [that]dances with charisma,” (Parterre Box), “a natural
crowdpleaser,” (NY Newsday), “vibrant textural transformations,”
(NYTimes), “multi-layered, whirling and propulsive,” (MinneapolisStar),
“witty, virtuosic and accessible,” (Clarinet & SaxophoneMagazine, UK),
“so exuberant [and] so full of character,” (SPNM New Notes,
UK).Summarized by the composer Lukas Foss during his tenureship as
conductor of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, “[Gach’s] writing for orchestra
is brilliant beyond words.” The composer Hugo Weisgall wrote of him, “a
composer…ofextraordinary technical command and intellectual grasp of
what music is all about.”
He has received commissions and awards in over 40 national and
international competitions including the American Lyric Theatre Poe
Opera Project, Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University, Astral
Foundation (Pew-Bandy) of New York andPhiladelphia, Frederick P. Rose
Prize,
David Evan Jones is a composer/theorist with diverse publications in
chamber music, chamber opera, computer music, computer-assisted
composition, and music for Korean instruments. Some of his theoretical
and compositional work focuses onstructural relationships between
phonetics and music.
His compositions have been honored by first prize awards in the Premio
AnconaCompetition (Italy), the American New Music Consortium
competition, and theMACRO International Composition Competition and by
awards from Prix Ars Electronica (Austria), the Bourges Electro-Acoustic
Music Competition (France),and the National Opera Association.
Thomas Piercy is a critically acclaimed musician with orchestral,
concerto, solo and chambermusic appearances throughout the Americas,
Europe and Asia. His performances have been described by critics as
"passionate," "pulling out allthe stops," "the best Piazzolla in NYC,"
and by the New YorkTimes as "brilliant," "playing with refinement and
flair"and "evoking a panache in the contemporary works."
