Concordance
Art of the Art Song
featuring Ljiljana Winkler
On Saturday, September 6th at 8pm, Composers Concordance presents Art of
the Art Song at Westbeth, featuring soprano Ljiljana Winkler and pianist
Markus Kaitila, with a program reimagining one of classical music’s most
intimate and enduring forms for the 21st century.
Among the featured composers is Robert Voisey, whose work brings his
distinct voice to the art song tradition. Known for championing
contemporary music through groundbreaking projects such as
Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame and Composer’s Voice, Voisey is also recognized for
his own compositions that blend neo-romantic sensitivity with experimental
innovation. His contribution to this program reflects his signature
approach—melding text, emotional depth, and a modern sensibility that
challenges and expands the art song repertoire.
This year’s Art of the Art Song also includes music by Natasha Bogojevic,
Debra Kaye, Denise Koncelik, Eugene W. McBride, Audrey Morse, Gene
Pritsker, David Saperstein, and James Nyoraku Schlefer. Several of these
composers will perform their own works alongside Winkler and Kaitila,
including Schlefer on shakuhachi, Morse on violin, Pritsker on electric
guitar, Bogojevic and Saperstein on piano, and poet Imelda O’Reilly
reciting her own text.
